Never been to either, however, hear that Bankkok is pretty good, as is Bali.Beware the Islamic extremists, as they're rather fond of the Bali nightclubs. That wasn't a joke, that was something I read on the MI5 website mate.

Hope you're having an ace time mate, catch up soon.

Yeah there is a government website in Australia called "smart traveller" - that has the do's and dont's for going to various countries, especially area's considered high risk. It's a bit overwhelming to be going somewhere that's been hit on such a hugh scale as the Bali night club bombings but we're not going to let it deter us from seeing as much as possible on the island.

I loved Bali, its amazing. Ill try and dig out some names and places soon/

Good lad Taylor.

I hear rumours of 5 star accomodation for $35 (Australian) - if that's true I'll be living it large for a month.

And Andy, I'll be home in November.

You'd never think you were half cut.

The only thing that indicates you are is your name being next to pretty much every single thread in the shed!

Haven't you heard of internet porn? There's much better things out there than KB my friend. :P

If I can find the name of the place we stayed I'd recomend it very highly.

Its not a 5 star complex, it was family run, but really nicely decked out in traditional things, it was like a 5 star but without the amenities, ie spa's, butlers etc.

It's been a very up and down experience buddy.

We had this image in our head that we'd jump off the plane and it'd be sunshine and BBQ's all the time. The reality was that it's been raining something like 80% of the time we've been here, summer wasn't as hot as it usually was and right now we're having a lovely cold winter.

It's still amazing to be here and do have seen and done the things we have but we're both done with Sydney and looking forward to travelling up the coast to see things like the great barrier reef and whitsundays island.

And obviously we can't wait to come home either!

Hello Mate

WK here, changed my name as I was bored with it.

If you are heading to Thailand, I would recommed Reilly, Koh Lanta, and Krabbi. Koh Samui is meant to be good as well, but I've never made it over there.

Enjoy it mate.

Bali is alright. Cheap as chips and the beaches are nice.

It's the Aussie's Corfu though, so it's full of young Aussies on the lash at night. It was definitely a bit tackier than I expected.

Also, be prepared to be accosted by an infinite number of street hawkers. They really don't take a polite no for an answer either.

On no accounts buy anything from them as you will definitely be ripped off.

I went to a place in the north of Bali which was a little quieter. It is famous for the gigilo's however so if you go be careful with your bird !! Can't mind the places name though.

The Reggae Bar in Koh Samui is an experience!

You will get a lot of hassle on the beach in Bali. Dont appear interested otherwise you wil be followed all over the place by dozens of hawkers. There are loads of cheap hotels. Nusa Dua is way more exclusive but way more expensive - just stick to the main town (I cant remember its name) but be prepared for hawkers.

imo Thailand is way better than Bali. I could happily spend the rest of my days in Koh Samui. Yuo can get stoned and peshed on the beach without any hassle.

There is a quality bar in Patpong, where you sit having a beer, the old curtains open where you are sitting and a bird gives you a gam while you sup your beer watching the footy.

Foods not bad either.

You may want to check with your missus before you go to that bar.

We stayed up in a quieter village near Ubud which is an absolutely beautiful craft and artist centre in the hills about 7 miles from Denpasar and probably 20 or so from Kuta, though not a beach in site. The main hotels nearby are v posh - Four Seasons Resort at Sayan, the Amandari, Ubud Hanging Gardens and the Uma Ubud. The people are a joy and very visitor friendly. You should also go up north to the volcano area - nothing is very far from anything else in Bali.

Aye, was speaking to a guy who heads over a lot, he's into golf and says you can get a round for 4, travel to and from the course, all the food you could shove into your pie hole and basically waited on for the day, ?30 all in for everyone. Much cheapness! Grab yerself some decent knock off gear too.

Just make sure you don't pay any nice Thai lady's bar bill, or she'll be loving you long time ;)

I think he may be telling porkies. Thailand is good for golf but you pay tourist rates. Still cheaper than normal but nowhere near ?7.50 a head for golf, food, and transport.

Kuta in Bali is great, but as another poster said,it is magaluf for aussies.

Much prefer Thailand,****et will be wet in september ,October,Kho chang near Trat or Kho Samui are better choices at that time of year. And it is as cheap as chips.

Instead of Bali, try Lombok next door, quieter and a bit pricey, but not "commercialised".

Whatever you choose, you will have a ball, that part of the world is amazing!

A shameless bump.

We've now booked all our Bali/Thailand accomodation - we're spreading Bali out a bit, South Kuta, Legian, Lombok & Ubud and in Thailand we're staying in Koh Samui.

Now that it's booked, the question changes slightly.

What is there to see and do, apart from dossing around on the beach and trying to avoid getting "bali belly"?

Bali.

When you change money you will be ripped off.

I REPEAT.

when you change money you will be ripped off, do not give them YOUR money in exchange until YOU have counted their money back to them in front of them.

Usual trick was to count the correct amount in front of you, then 'double check it for you' as slight of hand drops some of it onto their lap. I caught them at this several times....on one occassion the money they were trying to nick appeared at my feet under the desk. They are shameless about it.

In case your not sure....they will try and rip you off when you change money.

I had six weeks in Bali, Hired a jeep and toured the whole place.

Kuta - hawker city, I got fed up explaining I didnt need a bow and arrow.

Note: at the beach , they are only permited to hawk if you are within 15m of the road....so simply move further down beach nearer to the sea to avoid this.

Ubud in the middle of island , bit more humid, worth it for visit to monkey forrest, not much else

Sanur - v close to Kuta, but without the hordes.more of a paradise feel to it

top of island- few tourists, can stay in beach hotels for price of 2 pints, awsome.black sand.

left of island - didnt find much.

right of island- lots of nice wee places to stay/visit.

Lombok - youll no doubt be on rusty ferry from hell to get there, probably aquired from 2nd world war....I was so glad to get off it. also beware wee jaikeys that pick your bags up and run on ferry with them so they can surround you and demand a tip for doing so.

also if your going to Lombok I implore you to go up the left coast to Bansai so you can take small boat trip to the Gili islands (theres 3 of them, Gili Trawangan in particular)

Gili Trawangan was the highlight of my bali trip, no cars, taxis are horse and cart, good nightlife, beach huts for digs, snorkeling amazing, fires lit on the beach every night etc.

Have a good trip ya spawny get!

I do love a shameless bump now and again.

Era Macaroons - you weren't joking about the ferry ride being from hell. It took us 7 hours from leaving Bali to getting off the ferry at Lombok, complete pain in the hoop.

Bali is a great place but it's getting right on my nips having to say no to people all the time who're trying to pawn off crap to me. I've never wanted a fake Rolex before, thats not going to change because some local calls me "brotha" and tries to grab my hand. It can get a bit full on at times.

We've just had a week in Legian in what can only be described as the worst "hotel" I've ever stayed in. The place was a total dump and we had lizards crawling out a crack in the wall. Loverly.

Spent a deal of time out there including my honeymoon. In the South is Nusa Dua, which is the posh 5-star enclave. We stayed there for a while and then set off up the island. Big Aussie hangout is Kuta which is WEst side. Ubud is the capital and the big gem center - we stayed with a relative of the Queen of Ubud up there. That's actually not that grand - there are about a squillion relatives of the Queen of Ubud and this particular one ran a roach-infested "guest house" that we stayed in. Memory's a bit hazy now but I think the Monkey Forest is near here. Watch out if you go - they're viscious *******s!

And then there's the north....aah now that's where you want to get to. Very unspoilt, real traditional Balinese hospitality and loads of brilliant little guest houses run by Aussies that came over, did too much acid and never got back. Beautiful oceans, scary trips out early morning to see the dolphins in these pencil-thin boats with the sun coming up. Also saw one of my favourite ever gigs up there - A Balinese Bob Marley tribute band whose big number was a cover of...Another Brick in the Wall.

Have a brilliant trip.

Stay away from Bangkok, Koh Samui, ****et and Pattaya when/if you get to Thailand.

Head up north, Chaing Rai is cool, but if you want something different head to Mae Hong Song, Pai or Kanchanaburi.
