Hitting the Target

Watching the West ham game just now, player right through about 18 yds out to the right of goal,

managed to put it well past the right post, whole goal in front of him😧last night Fulham player given a great ball

in the middle of the box blasts it high and wide of the target, in both cases should have scored, these guys

are pros and should do a lot better, anyone remember bad misses on goals, all teams.

Big Uche was pretty good at missing ‘chances’ when one on one.

Off on a wee tangent.

When a goalkeeper saves a penalty, should we say that the player taking it  has “missed a penalty”? Or should that term only be used if the taker missed the target.

Failure to score has always been described as a miss.

I’m sure Agatha actually did ‘hit the target’ but the attempt at goal was so weak that someone (Flogel?) got back and cleared it off the line.

I remember Ryan Giggs missing one with the goalie out the way, kicked it over the bar from probably about the 18 yard line.

EDIT - found it:

(79) Worst open goal miss ever! - YouTube

On the subject of finishing, I am always berating the poor finishing at my son's level, it is incredible the number of kids who get one on one with the goalie and either kick it straight at him or blooter it wide.

Eamon Bannon missed one in a Euro tie (St Pats maybe) at the Gorgie Rd end. He was pretty much standing on the goal line and, somehow missed it.
I was right behind the goal and the look of confusion on his face was priceless

Has to be Chris iwelumo. I was behind the goal with the Norway fans and I celebrated wildly.
Soon realised he had missed when the fans around me and my mate were laughing at us.

Not a total shocker but Tony Watts missed header v Celtic on his debut was a bad one.

Yeah he did although I thought that was a difficult chance he still should have scored. 🙈

Pre season game at Whitley Bay (Henry's debut I think), the ball was bouncing in for a goal to us when Chopper McLaren decided to make sure and blasted it over from a yard out with no one near him. Of course, with Chopper, he might have thought it was the goalie's head...

Would say missed as he has not scored.

Changing it slightly I will tell you who was great at scoring chances when one on one and that was Willy Gibson.
