To settle a bet...

What is the earliest time you can drink in an Edinburgh pub pre and post Covid?

Need name of pub as well as some semblance of evidence

Thank you

You could drink in Stratties at 6am during normal times.

That’s what I thought but I couldn’t prove it. Is there any evidence to  prove?

I remember having a pre work pint one early morning in the Penny Black. Australia v Scotland world cup qualifier.

I remember my one and only pub all nighter that finished there. Odd  place where a guy about 5 foot was picking a fight with the bouncer inside. Bouncer was brilliant and didn’t get involved whilst ushering him outside. These days a.pint at 6pm isn’t allowed!!!

Oman’s bar at Craigmillar 6am

Portobello Bar 6am

I know people who drink in one and stay not far from the other

Penny Black and the place at top of Cockburn Street (Scotsman’s Lounge?) opened around 6.00am.

I used to pass the Porty Bar daily commuting to work and found it surprising how many folk bevvy at that time in the morning.

A believe it was allowed to open early for shift workers at the railway and post office depot’s but don’t think any of  them went there

Yes thanks, second lockdown started at midnight last night.

This one is only scheduled for 1 month.  The previous one lasted for 54 days.

Nice was indeed pretty grim, not too surprised though, tensions are quite high here just now, even in our wee place which is about 30 minutes away from Nice by train.

You keeping ok, R?

We can never tell how long they will last. Hopefully minimal but same will happen again when people get out unless there’s a vaccine. That’s looking like a month or two away.
Didn’t know about heightened tensions, but really dire to be around what’s happening.
We booked up to return to Nice in April. We’ll see how that works out nearer the time. Take care. M

Surely that was the Penny Black?

Previously called the Whip and Saddle, I think.

Pretty sure I've been in Spiders Web (obviously closed now) at 5am before. It was still open from the night before.

I've drank in the Spiders Web, Penny Black, The Marksman  plus one that was halfway up Leith Walk - from 5am - lots of times after still being up on the sweets.

No such thing as early. You used to be able to drink until 3am in a club, then go to a casino then to whatever pub opened early. The good old days, or early 2020 if you prefer.

Yeah, you could drink close to 24 hours in Edinburgh at one point. By the time the casinos stopped serving and you drank up it was past 4 and Penny Black open at 5am.

I'd say 5am. Penny Blacks, place halfway down Leith Walk and a few others. Generally (20 years ago) you'd have 2 hours to munch your kebab/burger and finish off the pre-pub bottles before you could get back out there.

Long time since I was involved in that madness.

Mental times when we use to leave subway or cav, head onto a chippy, get a munch and wait for the Scotsman to open its doors

That would be the Old Salt on Leith Walk. When I worked at Shrubhill bus garage I used to get sent over by the gaffer at 7.30am to drag the departments resident alcoholic out of the place.
There used to be loads at the bottom of Leith with early opening to fuel the docks nightshift finishing. The Corn Exchange was always a good one. Tommy Youngers place (now the Harp and Castle) used to open early and I remember the all night raves at Ingliston used to come back there in the morning. Surreal standing at a bus stop first thing in the morning watching a rave continue in a pub.

I worked at Shrubhill ( in the offices ) in 1982 for six months on a student placement. There were plenty alcoholics but I don’t remember The Old Salt. There was a pub across the road and up the stairs that I can’t remember the name of though.

Was it not next to the Boundary Bar?  (The old salt I mean).

That would be The Red Lion that had an upstairs. Bizarrely to reach it you would have walked right past the Old Salt as it was about 50 yards further down on the same side.

That’s the one. There were lots of bars on Leith Walk in those days. Odd that I missed it. 🤣

Half way between the Boundary and the Red Lion. The boundary was popular with the heavy drinkers as it let you run a tab and settle it up every Friday if they knew you.

Been confirmed as the Red Lion. 👍

Depending when you worked there The Halfway House was also next to Shrubhill on the same side.
Edit. Just spotted it was 82.

I visited the Penny Black about 15 years ago prior to an early morning train journey. I think it's the only establishment I've visited where I felt the need to wipe my feet upon leaving.

During festival time and December you could drink 24 hours.

Nightclubs open from 10pm - 5am.

Casino on york Place has/had a 5am licence.

Any hotel bar

(providing you know the staff)

Then stratties at 6am.
