Cade
This story had been rolling for years and years. Several years ago, around 250 unsafe houses in east London were condemned and scheduled to be demolished but never were as the council didn't have replacement homes ready for the tenants. So they offloaded them to a private company who have been charging residents way over the odds and have only been doing the very bare minimum by way of repair work. The residents formed a pressure group (People’s Empowerment Alliance for Custom House or PEACH) to force the council to take these unsafe houses back under their control and today they finally won their case. People shouldn't be forced to live in condemned houses. Nor should they be paying £365 a week for the privilege. Some rents will fall by as much as two thirds when the council takes back control and all repair work will be carried out over the next few months. Just another housing/slum landlord scandal in 21st century Britain. People power does still work, albeit slowly.
