I just saw Mathers in the OP and assumed it was the Broughton St one. I do have a recollection of going downstairs to a bar just across from it - seems to be called The Basement Bar now.

 

Anyone got a clue why there were two bars called Mathers?

I guess they were both owned by the same person called Mather!

Darlings Hotel was for many years the Waterloo Hotel. Sometimes the current owner would add his name to it like Gibb’s Waterloo hotel. Not sure when it became Darling’s. Clarinda’s may have been part of the hotel building!

Clarinda’s (and Sylvander’s) were at the other end of Waterloo Place;  Howies Restaurant now occupies the site according to Google Maps.

The other one was at Melville Place now called The Brunch which someone mentioned earlier in the thread.

in the late 80s it was called jules & as a council YTS it was the Friday night venue of choice.
