Goalkeepers!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

The return of Gordon has got me thinking about ex-keepers, specifically in the 21st century. I had a look through London Hearts and counted 27 keepers we've used  in match day squads competitively since the 1999/2000 season! Don't know how that compares with others, but that's a lot. Averaging more than 1 new keeper every season! I'll post the list below, and feel free to share your memories of some of the colourful keepers we've had in our time!

I'll start by simply saying, Eduardas ****ing Kurskis.

I don't even remember Vaaler or Windrum.

Rais M'Bholi.  Don't think he ever played, then I seen him having a blinder in the world cup.

I remember Windrum from an old FIFA, Didn't know until I looked that he was a sub for a league game. No recollection of Vaaler at all, but I was only 7 when he was here.

M'Bohli I think only ever played for the reserves and couldn't get a look in. Then at that World Cup, papers were trying to say Man United wanted him.

2007-2010 was a bit of a mad spell for keepers. We went through about 6, unsure who to rely on. In the end, Kello was outstanding.

Thought he was harshly treated to be honest. Made some great saves in his few appearances and then had a nightmare at Ibrox.

Was better than Hamilton IMO.

Hamilton and Perreira for me. Kurskis could of won the competition if he wasn’t rightly dropped after the sending off fiasco.

Back in the sixties (when I started watching Hearts) Jim Cruickshank, who was our keeper from my first game, was almost immovable as first choice and I only remember David Anderson and Kenny Garland as ever getting a game, with Garland the only one who ever had a 'run' when Cruiky was out of favour (with the management, not the fans) for a bit. The big difference now, of course, is back then a player was stuck at a club until that club wanted him to leave, but now the Bosman ruling has had as much an effect on keepers staying for any length of time as it has on outfield players. Still an awful lot of keepers in 20 years for a position that stability and consistency is a major plus for every team.

Only remember him playing against Celtic in the League Cup win (Velicka game) and thought he played well, but don't remember him after that. A look at his Wikipedia shows he faded into French lower league obscurity.

Well...look at Henry Smith, signed for (I think) something ridiculous like £2,000 from Leeds Utd in 1981 and played on through to 1995 and rarely lost his place unless he was injured. Goalkeepers were at clubs for years back then. Hamish McAlpine at Dundee Utd, Pat Bonar at Celtic, Campbell Money at St Mirren, Jim Leighton at Aberdeen, John Martin at Airdrie and loads more. Doesn't happen nowadays.

Most specialised position on the pitch. I would argue that a tremendous keeper is just as valuable as a 25+ goals a season player.

Difference between great, good and not so good keepers? The greats make less mistakes.

You're not wrong John. I posted in the Berra thread yesterday that IMO, another reason to add to explaining why his form dropped a lot, was perhaps taking on the extra pressure of knowing that Doyle and Zlamal are not what we need in goals. Confidence in your keeper is crucial to not just the team, but centre halves especially. The difference John McLaughlin made when he came was clear as day. Perhaps he just looked so good because we'd endured the shite of Jack Hamilton before him, but he was terrific that season.

I feel like our goalkeepers have gotten progressively worse. With the exception of Kurkis I don't think its unfair to say theres a pretty clear downward slide.

Joel Pereira is without doubt the worst goalkeeper I've ever witnessed in a Hearts jersey. No other keeper had such a damaging impact on our season. He effectively sent us down. Yes, guys like Halliwell or Hamilton had no business being at a club the size of Hearts but that is down moving up, rather than up moving down. Pereira should be utterly ashamed of himself. He cost Levein his job, he cost Hearts top flight football, he's deprived the likes of Cochrane, McDonald, Irving etc. the experience  of top flight football next season, he may well have solidified Hickey not signing an extension, being in the position we are cost Stendel his job. The knock on effects of his shiteness have stretched into the 7 figures. Levein takes ultimate responsibility, but by christ... what a shit keeper. It might sound like I'm blaming him for everything, blame goes around everyone but take him out and replace him with Bobby or even Gordon. Do we still finish in 12th? No we ****ing don't.

I've never seen a single player have such a negative impact on a team before. Its almost incredible.

Gordon, Neimi and Rousset are the best 3 IMO but thats pretty much universal.

Outside of those 3 I think Kello, McDonald and McLaughlin are probably the next 'top 3' IMO.

OTT by name... Nah you're not wrong mate. It's a strange one with Pereira too because he was quite highly at Manchester United, so what went wrong here? Did he just perhaps not give a ****? But as you said, better performances, or just being omitted from the team would've certainly changed results, and could've averted an absolute shitstorm. Zlamal, while has plenty flaws, was the best out of the 3 for sure. I understand why Stendel played Pereira though as he was pretty good with the ball at his feet which is what Stendel wanted. Just a shame he couldn't catch **** all and was scared of footballs.

Saw him in Asda Chesser in his Hearts gear once not long after he signed. I think we lost to Rangers that day/weekend. Naturally I gave him absolute dogs abuse for having a smile on his face....

Haha, I really need to get that name changed! Its suppose to stand for One Team Town since we own Hibs so often! :P

It seems dramatic, but replace him and say with a straight face we still go down. It can't be done. Even getting Gordon in January would have prevented this (Actually, it might end up being that not loaning/giving us Gordon cost Celtic their title if our court case puts null and void on the table... hows that for a butterfly effect :D )

In total seriousness, the negative impact Pereira had on the team is astounding. Bobby if played all season would have kept us up (granted we'd have been 9th or something, but still).

I think its a cautionary tale about never loaning another goalkeeper. Dangerous territory if they're shite.

Just been watching sone of our games on the you of tube and Jp is actually worse than I first thought.

He was ok at crosses and good with the ball at his feet but he Litterally saves nothing.

He dives over the ball often, and he let's a lot go through him, drops to his knees a lot as well for no reason.

Strange.

Even when he does save somthing it's either awkward or luck, the ball has just hit him on several occasions.

It doesn't, and it's a pity, because supporters tend to have an affinity with goalkeepers they like, possibly because they are generally so close to the fans and often respond to chants etc. But as I say, it's the Bosman ruling that leads to players moving on after a couple of years and keepers are no different. There's also a tendency for clubs to have more than one who is of a first team level nowadays and worth a run in the team. During Cruickshank's era the reserve keepers were just reserve quality (and it showed when they got a chance) and few teams bought keepers from clubs of a similar level (Cruicky came from Queens Park) and so they were seldom the finished article. Off hand I can't think of a Hearts keeper from an era pre-Bosman who went on to bigger and better things or even made a successful sideways move. Since 2000 we've had some great keepers, many signed on a free, I think, but we've also had some with hands of soap. Sadly we had three of those last season.

Nade's performances/goals against Hibs and general noise up of Hobos offsets the devaluation of Basso IMO

Edit: I've just remembered back when my season ticket was in the Gorgie stand and he was still playing for us, he skied a shot at goal pre-game which hit me square in the chest where i was holding my polystyrene tray of chips and curry sauce AND i was wearing a white jacket. Burn that cursed signed top.

An enigma of a keeper. Could make a great diving save, then lose the ball, and often a goal, when he landed having no ability to recover a ball that didn't stick. One such example that sticks in my mind was that great, but awful, match against Celtic in 1976 when Willie Gibson scored a hat-trick only to end on the losing side when Wilson made a great diving save, catching the ball just under the bar, but landed and let it go to, I think, Kenny Dalglish about two yards out. A nightmare end to a great match.
