Everyone could see the employment market for players (and maybe now coaches) was in danger of being a wasteland as a result of drastic cuts at all clubs in the UK. It was blindingly obvious that players in possession of contracts were much better to accept a reasonable wage reduction than to insist on moving on to seek a contract elsewhere. It was about providing security for players and reducing the burden on their employers.
