Back in the day when Scottish football was relatively competitive lots of greats maybe even the majority did not play for the OF. Numbers of greats overlooked in favour of OF players for the Scotland team would be more the question there. Most of our greats of the 50s got pathetically few caps. But he was the Aberdeen keeper when they won the league and brought to united by Ferguson so his merit in the question being asks stands.
