Ex-managers, looking back.

Was just thinking about the hype surrounding Daniel Stendel's appointment and, good or bad memories..thought about who we've had since I started going to Tynie. Hype with some appointments, not so much with others.

ALEX MacDONALD...turned out to be an astute appointment by Wallace Mercer. Almost won us the league and also brought pride back to Hearts, and our best run in Europe getting to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals against Bayern. Signed some great players like Sandy Clark, John Colquhoun, Craig Levein, Dave MacPherson and always hunted for a bargain down south.. Neil Berry (Bolton), Wayne Foster (Preston), Mike Galloway (Halifax Town). Favourite quote from Doddy when he was asked why we had such a good record over Hibs,   "Simple...we just didnae like them!"

JOE JORDAN...a major coup at the time. A top International player. Played some dull football but we were very hard to beat. Signed only about nine players in his two and a half years here (changed days eh!?) one of them being Ian Baird. He didnae muck about! Crunched everyone and anyone that got in his way. Sure he signed John Millar as well. He was decent.

SANDY CLARK...stepped in when Jordan was sacked and did enough to keep him as manager the following season. Signed a few good players including bringing John Colquhoun back. Maurice Johnston was a bit of a coup and did well enough. Clark done just about enough to keep us in the top flight the end of that season. Stevie Frail was an excellent right back.

TOMMY McLEAN....strange appointment by the then new chairman Chris Robinson. Signed a few duds but did manage to get Jim Bett in as well as the shock signing of Willie Jamieson. Wayne Foster got emptied to Partick Thistle and we got Craig Nelson and Jamieson from them. He never rated Maurice Johnston and treated him with contempt. He also wasted nearly £300k on Brian Hamilton from Hibs! Did like Hamilton's quote though at the time of signing. Fell out with folk at Hibs and said he'd "rather lick stamps in his wife's post office than play for Hibs!". Crackin!

JIM JEFFRIES...ah, now there was the man to turn the clubs' slipping standards (from since the MacDonald days) around. Three Cup Finals, Bruno, Salvatori, Adam, Cameron, Fulton, Flogel, Weir, Rousset, Niemi, McCann and more. Folk can slag off Robinson now looking back but if it wasn't for him we may never have seen these players at Hearts. Loved his quote on how Hearts should play  "if they score two, we'll score three" Great attacking football.

CRAIG LEVEIN...did pretty well first time round, solid top three/four. Christ knows why it's all changed for him after his second spell as manager. He signed us the likes of Ricardo Fuller, Mark DeVries, Phil Stamp who turned out to be excellent players, as did Paul Hartley in the end. Competed in the Europa League and we did, okay including a win in Basle. (Oh for a crack in Europe again one day!) Why it's all so different for him nowadays is unknown.

JOHN ROBERTSON...short spell but when Robinson sold out to Vladimir Romanov his jaiket wis on a shoogly peg. Did okay carrying on in the Europa when Levein left, signed Lee Miller who cracked in about 11 goals in 15 games for us. Never given a fair chance.

GEORGE BURLEY...ah, what could've been if he wasn't sacked! Top of the league, Fyssas, Skacel, Bednar and others. Great attacking football.

GRAHAM RIX....moving on!

VALDAS IVANAUSKAS...Least we hammered Hibs in the semi-final. Cup final itself was the most nerve-wracking game I ever went to! All these quality players yet we could've lost to Gretna in a Cup Final! The next few years the managers chair was a revolving door! Korabochka, Frail and Christ knows who else. Then....

CZABA LAZSLO....tried his best but wasn't working out. Next!

JIM JEFFRIES...came back, did brilliantly finishing third with plenty games to spare. Brought Skacel back, strangely thought Ryan Stevenson was worth £10k (I think it was) from Ayr Utd and he done extremely well. Remember thinking at the time "What, a ten grand signing from Ayr!? WTF!?" Did brilliantly to be fair, and returned again to do his bit. JJ was probably sacked unfairly.

PAULO SERGIO...poor guy never stood a chance with no signings of his own apart from a short 3 month contract near the end of the season for Craig Beattie (legend!) Would've loved to have seen what he could do with his own signings. Hammered the Hibs in the Cup Final (LEGEND!)

JOHN McGLYNN...hmmm!

GARY LOCKE..couldn't stop us from going down. Transfer embargo and the minus 15 scuppered us in the end. Possibly unfairly sacked.

ROBBIE NEILSON...did amazing in the Championship. Signed Sow, Zeefuik etc. Started off well in the Premier but a lot was going on above him.

IAN CATHRO...oh dear!

CRAIG LEVEIN...mid-table obscurity but a Cup Final. Got lucky with the draw during the rounds, league form dropping all the time.

DANIEL STENDEL...could be very interesting and the start of something good again. If any club and fans need it it's fekin us! Onwards and upwards, here's to the future.

Not sure there is hype around Stendel. Basically all we've done is bring in a manager who wants to play on the front foot where the previous guy preferred to counter the opposition first. Stendel won his first match in his 6th attempt - the media have made sure we know this and kept feet on the ground, indeed forced us to circle the wagons...
