Do you mean Freehouses? (A pub that isn't tied to or owned by any particular brewery such as Tennents, Belhaven or Greenking)

I don't actually know of any (except Wetherspoons)… I think most pubs these days are pretty much indentured to one brewery or another..

Didn't think you'd be considering spoons in your heated debate with your son (hate them aswell but pint of Schaehallion for £2.09 can't be argued with!)

Hope the JKB massive come through for you..

Rose Street Brewery?

Canny Mans (Volunteer Arms) is the second best boozer in Morningside imo.

I was going to DM you given your expertise in these matters, however the dealers in the Centurion got in my way for the last time until that bar is cleared out.

I remember when the brewery bought Mather's from Mac Bell ouch.....

You will have a fair few pubs in Edinburgh that are owned by Star Bars....Heineken but apart from that you will have those owned by pubcos and those who will be tied to a brewery because they look after the upkeep of the cellar etc meaning they have to stock at least some of their beers.

A good example is Tynecastle. It's a freehold but completely tied to Heineken.

I have been away for too long to know individual pubs these days though.

I remember your story about the folk in the Centurion selling their ill-gotten gains one Saturday afternoon, while you were in with your wife.

Sounds a great place!

Quite like the Hermitage.

I quite like the Waiting Room, Dave.

It was our ‘local’ for more years than I care to remember when it was the Belhaven.

The Hermi or the Merlin were never favourites of ours.

I refer you to my previous post 😉. Depends what you mean by brewery free. Most pubs rely on a brewery for their equipment and are then at least tied to a few of their products.

The other option is to either buy or rent that equipment and pay a call out charge each time it needs fixed.

Guess what trade I work in😂😂😂

I know plenty that are character and atmosphere free.

So don't go in there for a drink then. Dead simple.

Fierce Brewery 😉. I know what you mean though but on that argument you would need to include the two Brewdogs.

No. They use crowd funding. Equity for Punks is their marketing waffle. Beavertown sold out to Heineken.

Sorry, I didn’t make my post very clear last night.  🥂

I was trying to remember the previous name of the pub now known as the Hanging Bat.

I’ve since remembered that it’s where the Burnt Post used to be at the top of Lothian Road.

Thanks for your replies.

Stuart/Notts, my other guess last night was Chaplins (on the same side of the road as the Kings Theatre, heading towards Bruntsfield). Can either of you recall what it was called before that?

It was owned by an old chap called Tommy Pearson and a Rangers bus used to run from there.

Thanks,

Morgan

Pretty sure the wee boozer half way up the steps opposite Waverley station (Market Street entrance) is a free house.  It’s called The Halfway House I think?

Fine pub.

A place I always visit when back in Edinburgh.

@Stuart Lyon ?  Is Thomsons on the same premises as the old Bissets Bar?

Yes it is the old Bisset's Bar. Here's a not very good photo of Bissets Bar when Morrison St had 2 way traffic! Needless to say the bus stop isn't there any longer.

I recently worked to that I've been drinking on and off in there since 1968 when I worked in Canning House!

The Bow Bar on Victoria St was named the cauldron back in the early/mid seventies. Worked in the Bank of Scotland branch on corner of George IV bridge and Victoria St,  and used the cauldron for many lunchtime pints.
