The great thing about this thread is the future.  The next champion isn't far away.  Rather than a goalie, I hope it's the new Robbo.

Chronological order from my earliest memories.  I am looking at the list and thinking it's a wee bit overloaded with 70s players considering we were poor for most of that decade but Ford was the fist player I idolised,  Prentice was the most skillfull player I ever saw in a Hearts jersey and Busby, well I just coudn't leave him out.    The 80s choices were reasonably straight forward.  Jardine was wonderful at sweeper for 2-3 seasons, I could have picked McPherson from either his first or 2nd spell but Levein was simply a class act.  Had he not been hounded by injuries he would have gone to Liverpool (most likely) and easily reached 50+ caps.  McCann and Cameron are my picks from the 90s.  McCann was the nearest I have seen to Prentice only much much more consistant and Mickey C is the best box to box midfielder I have ever seen in a Hearts jersey.  Criminal how he often got overlooked by Scotland.  The noughties picks are Rudi (of course), and I thought long and hard about the final pick and went for Jankauskas, a top top class player who we would never have been able to sign had it not been for Romanov.   It's only when you look back you realise how lucky we were to see him in a Hearts jersey.

rudi must stay

Naysmith (loved seeing him bomb down the wing)

Naismith (watching him at times last season was excellent. Clever clever player)

Fuller (for that goal)

Demitri Mitchell (the wee man had superb talent on the wing and was unpredictable. More for first loan spell than 2nd)

Nicholson (in full flight the most skillful player I've seen in a Hearts Shirt)

Cameron (didn't see him that much. But by the time he left Hearts he was way too good for this league and controlled everything for us)

With Aird and Prentice on the wings, it was pretty good to see.

Mine are Drew Busby and Bobby Prentice too. I think for most people their heros are from their youth. I mean, Rudi Robbo and many others are probably heros to folk younger than us. It's a normal thing and I like that.

Totally agree, Torino.

Except for the Robbo bit. He came to the forefront at just the right time for me, I absolutely love the wee man, and drank with him almost every Saturday night for about three years. My mum also loved him and vice versa.

If it hadn’t been for Drew Busby, Robbo would be my number 1 Hearts hero, instead of number 2!

Made my top 12 but didn't quite make the cut.

Still my favourite manager, though. Three have lead Hearts to silverware in my time but it was Doddie who halted the decline and set us on the road to recovery.

Who knows how the story of HMFC, from 1981/82 onwards, would have panned out without Wallace making that club defining appointment.

Phew.

In addition to omitting Alex McDonald as a favourite player, I also left out Steven Pressley. A fantastic, trophy lifting, captain who was superb even when others around him weren't. Many, myself included, recognise that Hearts miss Naismith terribly when he's absent nowadays and Elvis was the same at the turn of the century.

Good luck to him and his Carlisle team against the emailers tonight.

The team Jeffries assembled, culminating in the 98 cup win, was perhaps my favourite Hearts “era”.

Seconded.

But weird how your favourite players aren’t necessarily the greatest. Dave McPherson remains my all time hero. The sheer unpredictability of what the outcome might be every time he set off definitely helped...

No. That was a Cup tie in early 1983 while we were still in Division 1. The Bone goal game later in the year when we were back in the Premier. Made it 1-1. Henry had performed heroics in the first half to keep Celtic down to one. So much so that Jimmy Greaves refused to believe Henry could be that good a goalie...and Scottish.

Someone posted a link to the 4-1 Cup defeat recently and I was angered all over again at Provan's simulation (cheatin' f#£&%r) and Danny McGrain's thuggery.

Still, got to see Doddies late consolation for the first time as I'd left at 3-0.

I might be wrong (age, memory) but I can't recall big Davy ever getting us into trouble when he did that. Can still see the big giraffe gliding through the opposition in my minds eye.

Superb.

When playing CL was easily the best centre half in Scotland. Due to the OF bias he didn't get the recognition he deserved.

Edit: I'd go as far as saying he was better than Gough.

Some of the "favourites" weren't even the best players. Neil Berry, Chopper McLaren, Jim Townsend, Rene Moller, Dave Clunie et al. Also, not many have mentioned the best goalkeeper we have ever had - Jim Cruikshank.
