Dagger Is Back

We're very grateful for all the support that JKB has given us over this year as we tackle the issue of a lack of PE kit for kids in some of our schools. Our fund raising efforts have been going very well and following on from our latest very successful campaign, we're in the process of arranging another delivery of new kit which will be distributed along with the 600 pieces of kit which are currently being held at Brunstane PS.

We want to share news of the impact that your generous donations have so here we go.

Earlier this year we supplied some kit to Kirkcaldy West PS and we were absolutely delighted today to receive this feedback.

We were gifted a number of strips from Kit4Kids Edinburgh and wanted to let people know the difference this has made in our school.

Kirkcaldy West Primary enjoys a large and mixed catchment area with a pupil roll of around 500 primary pupils plus capacity for 126 children in our Nursery provision.

Our school is over 100 years old and is a single storey, stone built, listed building. The school is situated within a built up, well established residential area of Kirkcaldy.

Like many Victorian built schools in town centre settings, we have no grassy areas or playing fields.

At Kirkcaldy West our vision is to equip each child with the skills necessary to be an active member of a 21st century global community. Our broad aims are for our pupils to be Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens. We embrace new learning approaches and technology to help us do this better!

Despite our lack of facilities we are very keen that our pupils enjoy a top PE experience and are equipped to continue as active individuals in their community. We invest in PE by being one of the few that continues to employ a specialist PE teacher, and have close links with our secondary PE department.

One area that had concerned us was the number of our pupils that failed to bring PE kit, not because they didn’t want to participate in PE but because they didn’t have the necessary kit to bring from home. We used the donated kits from Kit4Kids and branded them up with our school logos to keep as a Kit bank for pupils that didn’t have PE kit. We keep them in the PE cupboard and the pupils that do not have kit, head to the store at the start of PE and return them afterwards. We keep them in the school and wash them each week. The feedback from the pupils has been really positive, so much so that we have had a few issues with pupils who do have their own PE kit, preferring to wear the school kits.

Active Schools Coordinator Liz Anderson said, “These kits have made a big difference in the school. We have maximum participation in PE due to the fact that all pupils have the necessary kit to take part. We offer a range of club sports tasters such as rugby, tennis, football, hockey and many more sports and in the past we have had pupils sitting out as they cannot get their school uniform dirty, and they don’t have a PE kit. This kit allows every pupil to access a range of sports and PE irrespective of their social economic status. The feedback from parents has been really positive too stating the difference that this makes to them, especially at a time where kids can outgrow clothes so quickly. We have also now added a gym shoe bank, where parents can donate outgrown shoes.”

We would like to thank Kit4Kids for this donation, as every child should have the right to play, and this includes PE and sport, without cost of the class or equipment to participate being a barrier.

Thank you JKB. Watch this space for some more good news

Having only recently become aware of kits4kids, I have to say that's some great feedback from Kirkcaldy. Well done Oddball and Dagger is back, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting either of you but we have spoken via PM on here. Both of you come across as unassuming guys who, through what I am sure is quite a time consuming project on top of your own every day lives, are making a difference to kids across the area who would otherwise miss out on the simple pleasures of taking part in sport at school. Not that I'm a great sports person myself but, by allowing kids to take part in sport from a young age can surely only help teach them skills and core values that will be useful in later life. Not all will be great at sport but, by learning how to be part of a team or practicing individual sports at a young age will provide them with an introduction to understanding things like team work which, can only improve their social skills (made all the more harder in the digital world kids live in now!) Well done guys and well done to any volunteers you may have behind the scenes too!
