Last night's penalty

Le Chat

Recommended Posts

Haven't seen it on the telly but got a really good view at the game. I can think of only two occasions when any referee would not have given it as a penalty.

1. If the same situation had happened to a player wearing blue at Ibrox.

2. If the same situation had happened to a player wearing green and white hoops at Parkhead.

SEEN IT LAST NIGHT, HARSH BUT PROBABLY RITE, HE THREW HIMSELF AT THE BALL WITH HIS HANDS UP BUT NO INTENTION TO BLOCK WITH HIS HANDS.

he slid in to block it with arms and legs everywhere and it hit his arm which was above head height.

It was a goalkeeper style block.

Clear penalty and i cant believe the conspiracy guff that prevails on this board at times. The tie was lost at Tynie and sadly you dont need football association conspiracies to deny a team thats 10th the title as usually they are more than capable of mucking it up themselves...Which hearts these days are truly great at doing.

I wasn't at the game but listened to the description on HW. I have to say having now seen it I can understand why it was given. Johnson did slide in with his arm up in the air. The contact was clearly accidental but with his arm in the air there is always a 50:50 risk that a penalty will be given.

Problem is we know which side of 50:50 the decision would have fallen if it had been at the other end.

By the letter of the law it is NOT a penalty as the rule states the handball must be deliberate which it clearly was not.

I must say however that (as a qualified ref) if a hand is in an unnatural position as it was last night then I think a penalty should be given. That is only my opinion though, as I say the rules say last night's was NOT a penalty and I'm p1$$ed off to be out of the cup as a result.

Just saw it on the telly there.

A difficult one. It wasn't deliberate handball that's for sure.

I suppose its one of those ones that can go either way. Unless its Hearts that is, as its always a penalty when its one of our players.
