If not the original which is probably long gone, wouldnt it be great to have some sort of replica of this somewhere in the redeveloped ground.

What a thing of beauty.DPy1E1KX4AA6H67.thumb.jpg.765c5ecd717d40186c9af074468f5df3.jpg

Imagine the merchandising potential with it.

Just as well it'll stay hidden for most of its life, that's horrendous!

I thought that was the plan?

Didn't hear anything officially, but folk supposedly ITK claimed that the sign was being recreated

There was some posters on here, from various trades, who offered to help out for free but it came to nothing.

That's what I was thinking, perfect place for it.

I don't know, a two door MkII Ford Escort? Probably a bit of a rust bucket, there's a page on Facebook for classic Fords, mostly links to E-Bay sales of reconditioned cars some of which are a fortune

I previously suggested making miniature wooden versions of this and other versions like the beware of pickpockets etc. I mentioned to Ann Park at the auction, she seemed to think that it was viable...not sure if the idea is a goer or not.

Make it happen Hearts.

I thought I had read that the sign had been kept in storage in the ground somewhere?  Don't quote me on that as I can't remember where I heard it!

One day (way back as kids) when on the bus coming back from town, it stopped in traffic opposite the sign.  I said to my mate it's customary to raise your right hand in homage.

He swallowed what I said and done something closer to a Nazi salute

Daft wee memory that always crops up when I see a pic of the sign :)

People saying this should stay in the past??!!

Are you having a ****ing laugh??!!  **** off!

This is one of the sights of my childhood. Absolutly glorious to see it passing by on the bus.. Loved it. Gave me goose bumps every time.

"Looks like somethng from the wild west"..  What do you want instead? Some Neon eyesore surrounded by advertising boards for the latest Sony Playwithyourself Station, hotel chain, Sports brand or Soft drink? You people are exactly what's wrong with so called modern football supporters. Too much concentration on whatto look at surrounding the pitch as opposed to what really matters which is what's happening on it.

Kept in the past where it belongs....

I suppose the likes of John Roberston, John Colquhoun, Antii Niemi, Wullie Bauld, Alfie Conn etc should all be kept in the past? If not actually them then something approaching a replica of them? While I'm at it, Rudi Skacel, Stephan Adam, mark De Vries, Miko, Chesney, Craig Levein (as a player).. They're all in the past, who'd like to see a return of players of that calibre, if not replicas of.??

Exactly, we'd kill for players like that now and a huge proportion of the support wpould dearly love to see something akin to that beautiful old sign  at Tynecastle to pay homage to days gone by, without which we wouldn't be here today.

Probably prefer to see a small plaque in the same style as a wee homage, rather than something quite so on the nose. It was a part of my childhood too.

I think we are a Plc now, and not a limited company, so not sure we can officially use it under company law.   I could be wrong though.

Either way, it will be lovely to seenmit in some capacity.   If it still exists.  Maybe in the museum.

Great post. Sums up perfectly what that sign means to generations of older Hearts fans. It was a true Gorgie landmark.

As I mentioned above, I would incorporate the image in the mural with other images of Gorgie. No problem that way with the new company status.

What the **** have the players got to do with the old sign? And you enthuse about it before accusing others of being too concerned with the surroundings....irony bypass.

It wasn't beautiful in any event, whilst it was a landmark of sorts even then it was totally incongruous and just an oddity of a design. It's a football stadium not the OK Corral.

I think a few of those old cars make it look earlier than it was. The picture quality is quite sharp compared to a lot of hazy 70s images.

Plus, I could swear the car of the left (is it a Ford Cortina or a Granada?) is an 'E' reg which if correct, would mean the picture was taken in 1987 at the earliest.

There's also a CCTV camera mounted on the sign itself. Did we have CCTV in the 70's?

The irony of the OP and the fact there was a massive thread on this previously tickled me. As did the angry angry man shouting about Alfie Conn.

I'd love for us to bring a modern version of the sign, minus the curves and the old 'Wild West' saloon bar look.

It must be a generational thing.  If you remember it being up, it probably stirs some sort of emotion, and the maroon tinted glasses make it look better than it was.

Personally, I think it looks absolutely awful.  We're trying to build a nice modern stadium, not a Wild West Saloon

Probably one of the most iconic, if not THE iconic, image of the club's entire history. Whilst I agree there's probably not a place for it a Tynie these days but it's certainly anything but awful.

I bet you people of a certain age will agree with you - it is iconic, but it means very little to me because it wasn't up at any point in my lifetime.

It's the same sort of argument that people have with the current (re-branded) badge and the older one - it's okay to have different opinions

I would always sit on the side nearest the sign when I was on the bus getting that quick look as it went along gorgie road. :)

I think you are right. For those of us above a certain age it brings back fond memories. I used to love going past on the bus and seeing that big sign. However it’s been gone nearly 30 years now and in a few years more supporters won’t have that same warm feeling than wil have it.

So, despite previously always wanting it back in all its glory I think it is time to let it lie.

A smaller one at the entrance to the museum would be nice though. ?

I love it. I love that painting of it too and have it hanging in my hall. Maybe a digital version of it could be rustled up. I'd certainly like to have it back

That would be a great idea, or even a scale-size plaque on a wall somewhere that is in the same design would probably be a good way of keeping it going.  No point letting the memory die out completely, as has been pointed out by a few posters including yourself, it was iconic and stirs up fond memories.  It's part of the club's history, regardless of what people think about it!

Let's also get a new one up, with a new design, and one that will be the iconic one of the current and future generations

Geoff the Mince

It's something I saw every day growing up ,

Monday to Friday walking past going to school (Tynecastle )

and obviously on a Saturday  going to the football (when I enjoyed it)

For me it's great to see old reminders of Tynecastle ❤️

Stick it in a museum (if it can be found). I think too many older fans want to reminisce back to the 70's and 80's. As a younger fan (22), Tynecastle Park was a big enough change for me and I'd like the stadium to have a modern feel to it. It looks very dated and I think it would detract from where the stadium is now.

No offence intended, I do understand it brings back great memories.

Until 4 or 5 years ago it was kept in storage out by the airport. I believe some attempt was made to restore it when we were in admin so it could be auctioned but it fell apart due to not being sealed or treated or properly stored where it was.

Not sure what happened to it after that by I imagine it doesn't exist in any usable form now.

Honestly don't get it....big piece of wood with an awful shade of maroon with big bold white writing. Would look totally out of place anywhere in Tynecastle.

I get the nostalgia some people get but we need to move forward not backwards.

Maybe i just don't get it due to my age.

I preferred how it was painted in the 60's when I first attended games.  Dark maroon background and a nicer letter type.

Anybody got any old photos of that one?

My dad painted it on my bedroom wall in two seperate houses. Was in the newspaper with it too. Wish I still had the clipping.
