I did a paper on the conflict there for a course in college back in 1997 or thereabouts, and little has changed since. I had hoped that with the downfall of Suharto things would get better. I also think the demand for palm oil and timber is driving a lot of this. "Free West Papua" is also very complicated, as if I recall the island has as many *language groups* as Europe has languages. So there's no indigenous political unity, one of the reasons the other half of the island has a persistent problem with political dysfunction.
