i8hibsh
It would be bad taste to hijack the latest RIP thread so I will start a thread on it. I am seeing this a lot. Why? Think when so many top stars go in the one year it becomes a little out of the ordinary. This year has taken more than enough top class entertainers that weren't old enough to go. I agree somewhat though; someone said this on the Peter Vaughan thread, he was 93 FFS!
i8hibsh
I think it is more a case of a good few died early on so we are left thinking there were loads. ToadKiller Dog
Peter Vaughan was not a celebrity he was an actor and a fine one at that . Same with Robert Vaughan ,Prince ,Bowie etc . 93 is a good age ,nothing wrong to showing respect to somebody you enjoyed watching their skills at work over a lifetime , same ways as if an old Hearts player dies . It does seem more than normal amount of talented artists , sports people etc have died but many do seem to have reached the end of their natural life .Statistically there likely is slightly more than previous eras as people live longer and people who die earlier become more stand out . And of course social media puts it more in your face and certain types go overboard .but social media does annoy on many more seriousthings ,like pushing around lies and false news ,whipping people up into mass frenzies . As the 20th Century progressed, there were more and more fields where people could gain "celebrity" status. While at the start of the 1900s you would need newspapers to dedicate precious column inches to you to gain fame or notoriety, these days you can literally become a "celebrity" by sitting on your sofa at home watching TV (if the selection criteria for that Ant & Dec programme are anything to go by). Are we going to pass a tipping point where no "celebrities" deaths are going to be treated like with such fanfare because everybody becomes anesthetised to the constant faux grief, or is it going to reach the stage where some no mark with a You Tube channel that has a following of 2000 wasters who do nothing else than sit around in their underwear perusing cat videos gets the full "why 2032, why?" nonsense? As long as Robbo gets the state funeral he deserves, I couldn't care less tbh.

Given I posted the Peter Vaughan thread, I'll try to respond to your points. Yes, people, some famous, some respected, others unknown and undervalued, die every day, every year. As has been pointed out though, this year has seen a remarkable amount of, dare i say, high profile artistes roll a seven. The reference in my OP to 2016 was slightly tongue in cheek, but you will no doubt see that as arrogance on my behalf. As no doubt this response will be too. i8hibsh
55.3 million people die each year. Now it would be safe to extrapolate that. Now, I am guessing this number had no major spike in 2016. But all the celebrity ambulance chasers seem to think this has been an extra ordinary year. The absolute fact is that 2016 was no different to any other year. Life expectancy remains the same and so does the birth and death rates. "2016 do one" has as much relevance as "2009 do one".
