Music: cover versions top 3

I P Knightley

I'm being asked to name my top 3 cover versions.

The rules are that they have to be studio recordings (ruling out Summertime Blues by The Who) and we're avoiding collaborations like the Jools Holland "Friends" series and that album by Tom Jones. I have to be 100% of the opinion that the cover is much better than the original.

Here's my 3; what's yours?

Saturday Night's Alright (for fighting) - The Who. (Orig. Wee Fat Reg, the Puff fae Pinner). Can't stand Elton John's singing but this and a few others on the Two Rooms album showed that he and Bernie Torpid couldn't half write a decent song.

Hallelujah - John Cale. (Orig. laughing Len Cohen) Could have gone for Jeff Buckley's but he wouldn't have done this if Cale hadn't put his version on I'm Your Fan along with a few other decent tributes, including Lloyd Cole doing Chelsea Hotel

Roll Over Beethoven - ELO (Orig. Chuck "Neil" Berry) I had a big ELO thing as a teenager and this was pretty epic.

Honorable mentions to David Bowie covering Springsteen (Hard to be a Saint in the City) and Scissor Sisters with Pink Floyd (Comfortably Numb) both of which are fantastically "interesting" but I'm not certain they top the originals.

(Like the schoolboy crushes, I have an inkling that this may have been done on JKB before but, hey, here's some irony - a cover thread for an original thread... all about covers. But it could just be a case of deja vu)

Wild Is The Wind - David Bowie. My favourite vocal of all time by anyone.

Modern Love - The Last Town Chorus. Brilliant, far better than the original (It's just a coincidence that there's a Bowie theme going on, honest).

If You're Looking For A Way Out - Tindersticks. Last song you would ever expect them to do but it's sublime.

And for the record I love the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb. Mainly 'cos it annoys Pink Floyd fans! Pink Floyd are vile.

Ok...here goes

Hallelujah - much as I love Leonard Cohen's original version, as covers go, it would be equal first between Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright.

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

Nirvana - Man Who Sold The World

Honourable mentions: Sid Vicious - My Way, Manics - Suicide Is Painless, and Stiff Little Fingers - Running Bear

Doesn't Make it Allright - Stiff Little Fingers

Interesting. Who did the original - I hadn't realised it was a cover?

Good shouts elsewhere. I'd forgotten that Rockin' All Over the World was a cover; I don't think I've ever heard the original.

As for folk saying Jeff Buckley for Hallelujah! - I appreciate the sentiment... but you're actually wrong. John Cale is the correct answer. For an extra point, the worst cover of the song is by Bono; possibly the worst cover of any song ever, in fact.

If it was easy - I wouldn't be asking. I've got to whittle about 60 possibles down to 3 by tonight. I shouldn't have asked on here 'cos that 60 was about 55 before I started this thread :D

Had One on the iPod on the way in this morning. It's good because it shows that you don't have to be a pompous, over-bearing, self-important nob-end to deliver a good song well.

Whiskey in the Jar was a great cover when performed by Thin Lizzy - is it not "trad. arr. Lynott"?

The Bis cover of Joy Division's Love will Tear us Apart is one of my favourites.

It's a great tune to begin with but to take the original and make it so different and yet such a fond tribute to the original is a great achievement.

They made into an electro masterpiece.

Here it is if you don't believe me.

Despite an objection from someone who likes (in ascending order of horrificness) Led Zeppelin, Stereophonics, Elton John, Pink Floyd and George Michael (dear God!), I stand by my opinion. The Syd-less Pink Floyd are ghastly.

(Sits back smugly, hoping nobody will cast up Bowie's 'Laughing Gnome' Deram period)
