As far as I see it it is a total myth. Having watched my first derby in 1970 the better side (even if not the better side on the day) has usually come out on top. Fortunately since 1983 the better side has for the most part worn maroon

I dont think it is that form goes out the window on derby day. The wee team just raise their game when playing us, narrowing the quality gap

It's funny this has been brought up as I was talking about this at work recently. I think it's a myth and not just when it comes to Hearts and H1b5.

It seems to be a cliche that has stuck in football and somewhat a hopeful superstition of the inferior side going into a match.(form goes out the window theory)

If you took the time to look over the history of most derbies in Britain I'm sure the best side in general at that time would be dominating the derby.

Of course every dog has their day as have Hibs, but Hearts have been undoubtedly the stronger club for a very long time and this reflects in the derbies. I've said for long enough that Hibs are no stronger than a mid to bottom table Spl club (when they were there) so why should Hearts not expect to beat them regularly(we do of course) as we would other clubs of similar level?

The hype of the derby gets in the road sometimes but Paulo Sergio was spot on with his playing down of the hype pre Final in 2012.

If you look at the Stats

When Hearts are better they win just under 50% = Myth

However when Hibs are better Hearts win 40% to Hibs 31% = 'Fact'

The only time form seems to go out the window is when Hibs are going in as the favourites, we still win most of those games.

When we go in as favourites we usually do the business.

Form goes out the window, but the better team on the day will usually come out in top. Usually the better team is the team that has better players. Usually Hearts have better players than Hibs. That is why we usually win.

I agree with this.

I do remember a couple of exceptions though. New Year's day 1998 and the following derby that season. We were flying high whilst doomed Hibs were at the bottom of the league. We drew 2-2 after being 2-0 up at Tynecastle then somehow lost 2-1 at Easter Road.

We should win but there are exceptions to every rule which is why I am never more than cautiously optimistic before a derby.
