Rose Street Pub Crawl

I watched a movie on Sky the other night called "The Worlds End".

It was pretty ridiculous but it was basically about 5 middle aged lads going back to their own town and attempting what they called "The Golden Mile" which consisted of 12 pubs. It was a pub crawl they didnt manage to finish when they were in their teens, only reaching the 9th pub.

It then got my thinking about pub crawls I have been on when I was younger. The first that came to mind was Rose Street. From memory, correct me if I am wrong, Rose Street has 18 pubs in total if you count The Standing Order. Now me and my mates attempted to do the whole 18 pubs a few times but failed each time. I think the best we managed was 14. We used to start at the East end of Rose Street at The Abbotsford and work our way along. We never did mange to reach Dirty Dicks, The Bad Ass and finally Scotts.

Has anyone managed to do the whole 18 and have you got any funny stories you can share of what happened on the way.

Tried it countless times in my yoof - and failed miserably each time.

From pints to half pints, shots every other pub, nothing worked and each time I was reduced to a blob of vomituous sewage in a gutter

Haha! I know mate, tell me about it. First time we tried it we were on pints of lager. After 10 pubs one of my mates fell and knocked himself out in the toilet. Second time we went on Guinness. We thought it would be easier to drink than lager because it was smooth. I am not even going to go into the details of that failed attempt!

I dont know, its pretty immature but watching that movie has given me a bit of inspiration to get the lads back together and give it one more try.

Never tried the Rose St challenge but myself and a mate once tried to have a 24hr sesh, started at midday but could only manage til six the following morning where we were left feeling somewhat fragile drinking cups of tea in a cafe. Wasn't sick even once :)

Doubt I could manage even half that now....which will please my bank balance.

Theres the Guinness session challenge. The old advertising used to say Guinness is good for you- supposedly partly due to the iron in it. Someone worked it out and it takes 17pints of Guinness to get your recommended daily intake of iron apparently. Good old life skills classes at school!

Have never tried it but have always though it would be a great one to do- especially on St Paddys day

Tried it once, Wetting the bairns head, went to Powderhall then onto Rose Street. I was 28 then and liked a bucket, but every time my brother got me a pint he also get me a Rusty Nail. I have never remembered a whole night after 4 or 5 Rusty Nails.

I don't know if I done it or not, but we did go to the casino at Rutland Square

Done the uphall to broxburn one years ago. Had more than one in each, not sure if I made the last pub but my mate broke his collarbone and dislocated his shoulder. I managed to keep my feet :)

Yep I think our main problem is it never ends up just being one drink in each pub!

How many pubs are there in Rose Street - I fancy trying this one evening.

And which end of Rose Street does one start?

Do you think that it's a shorter walk one way?

Think there were about 18 boozers, I started on bottles and ended up on vodka

Destruction Derby

Not Rose Street, or even Edinburgh, but as a keen cyclist and ale drinker I sometimes do a 2-wheel crawl on the North York Moors near to my home. My crawl roughly follows the course of the river Esk, and covers 11 pubs and 8 villages, with a pint in each pub. There used to be 13 pubs, but a couple have closed down. I know it's not as many as a Rose Street crawl, but including the ride to my home and back it's about a 30-mile bike ride, so it's still fairly impressive.

Surely that's not the safest of things to be doing.

So you cycle home about 15 miles after drinking 11 pints?

The one we used to try was the Leith Walk crawl. Quite an effort back in the day, the golden rule being start at the bottom as that way when you were hammered you were reaching the safer pubs near the town.

Doing the Royal Mile pub crawl for my mates 40th next month. I think there's around 14 pubs. Can see us being refused entry before we get to the end, if indeed we get anywhere near the end

Always fancied doing a reverse night out.

During the festival hit town for first drink at like 2am 3am then drink thru to like the afternoon before calling it a night.

All roads lead to Gorgie

The thing is you might need to take out a loan to do it nowadays. City centre is pricy. Have been in most of them over the years but about six in one night was about my limit. I did have a few in most mind you.

Absolutely no way could I do this - even in my youth it would have been a stretch.

Reckon the best i could manage these days is a latte in every Costa in town.

Actually you're right, managed a fair old sesh on my birthday last month...first man out and last man back and not too wobbly either :)

Down here in Southsea you have the Albert Rd pub-crawl, there's about 14-15 pubs so easily doo-able!!!

Had two mates crash at mine when I stayed on Constitution Street. One boy in his 40's the other in his 70's. I had to go to work but they did the Leith Walk crawl. Ended up the guy in his 40's burst and trying to get a train back to Fife, the other boy standing on the platform giving it, "are you sure you have to go son, do you not fancy one in Coopers?"

Along with guys from work I ambitiously arranged an Edinburgh A-Z pub crawl one Saturday the aim being to have a drink in each. From (a hazy) memory this was the route

(Bar) Alba - tick, think we had 2 drinks in here while waiting on others turning up.

Biddy Mulligans - tick

Candlemaker Arms (wasn't open so failed there)

Deacon Brodies - tick

Ensign Ewart (refused entry)

Frankensteins - tick

Greyfriars Bobby - tick

Halfway House - tick

Ivanhoe - tick

Jekyll & Hyde - tick

Kenilworth - tick

Logie Bairds Bar - tick

Mitre - tick

North British Hotel - tick

O - couldn't find a pub starting with O - failed

Penny Black - tick

Queens Arms - tick

Rose Street Brewery - tick

Standing Order - tick

Tiles - tick

Uluruh - too far away by this point

Victoria & Albert - tick

At this point there were only 2 of us left and we'd had 19 drinks by this time and couldn't think of any pubs starting with W, X, Y or Z.

We do it every year and each year it gets harder and harder. We start at the abbotsford and work our way along! From the hogshead onwards is always a blackout or v v hazy! There are some superb Picts and brilliant stories over the years. Last year was the 10th year we'd done it. We've done it as pub golf once and that had a number of folk finished early doors. We always try to make the first 10 pubs pints. Frenchies was an interesting introduction to the crawl!

Some of the stories and photos are priceless. Well worth a go if you haven't done it!

I used to work in the World's End, the amount of times people asked me if the film was based on that pub was ridiculous, not even seen the film.

Think I've tried and failed it a few times.

Have also done the drunken cycling thing. Used to go from village to village in China, having a bottle of beer at each in the wee shop. Used to tell them I was from a different country each time, so that if the shop owners ever chatted with each other, they'd be flummoxed at the different nationalities cycling their way through their district!

After the first derby this season we did the H-E-A-R-T-S pub crawl. Haymarket - Ensign Ewart (awful) - and so on... smaller scale than some of those mentioned!

Tried it. We met a couple of tatooed, goth chics in the Black Rose, that scuppered it. Women eh.

Remember when Rose St used to be good?
