lewis2006
Apologies for the off topic post but I need to vent somewhere where people understand the frustration! (I work either 8-4 or 10-6 by the way and can claim time back if I have to fly anywhere...) Haven't played the casino tournaments in a while, but play the Diane's Nuts poker league game on a Monday night because it's a decent crowd and there's at least 10-15 good players out of an average field of about 45(which is better than the casinos a lot of the time!). I was running well for ages, getting to the final table 7 out of 8 tournaments, peaking 2 weeks ago when I took it down. Trouble is, it seems I HAVE peaked! Last week I played pretty average, and when I moved in with about 12 big blinds over a standard raise I wasn't surprised to see I was ahead in a coin-flip, which I inevitably lost. No big deal... Last night though was sick. First hand of the night and I'm on the button with Pocket Js. It's 8 handed, and all bar one player ahead of me limps in (blinds are 25,50). I really want to either take the pot there or have a much better idea of where my cards stand so I raise it 250 (oversized I know, but the number of players in the pot bothered me). EVERYBODY calls (bar the blinds), so the pot's around 1300. Flop comes 4c,8d,Jd so I've got top set. Action Checks round to the guy on my right, who bets 200. Bit wary of the 2 diamonds and think the undersized raise (considering the pot) is him wanting me to just call and give him a free (or almost free) card. Played with this guy before and know he'd call anything with A,8 (or maybe even A,4 sometimes) so I pushed all in (starting stacks were 3000)- he turns over 9d,10d for the open ended straight flush draw. Turn comes 6d and the board doesn't pair on the river which leaves me as the second player out in the whole tournament. Most frustrating thing is, I can't really blame the other guy for playing it badly (though I don't think he actually ever considered the fact the only reason he should have called preflop was because he'd been priced in preflop by the other callers- just think he's the sort of player that gets really attached to suited connectors). I know nobody likes hearing bad-beat stories (and it's not even really a bad beat since the guy probably did the right thing at each stage) but it sucks flopping top set first hand in a big pot and losing it. To the other poker players on here- do you think you'd have played it any differently, or do you think if I had played it differently there would have been a way of getting away from it? Dont play poker so to me that just says blah blah blah

I hate playing Jacks ...often leads to trouble but practicly impossible to lay to lay down pre flop, especially when youve been sat there folding rubbish after rubbish. Really dont think you could have got away from this post flop. Perhaps larger raise , pre flop to 500 or more....200 isnt much to fob off eagerly keen pub poker players all looking to get lucky early.
Era Macaroons
Nice one mate. Not trying to outdo you but I had my biggest ever gambling win last night. Played a ?20 qualifier on Saturday night to get into a ?150 poker tourney on Sunday. Won that so won entry to the ?150 game and when there was only 8 of us left out of the 51 that entered last night we agreed to split the prize pot and took home ?950 each. ?20 into ?950 = ecstatic! what site do you use? Problem is, you don't always want to scare away all the action when you've got the hooks, you just want to know where you stand. Think you could be right about raising it more preflop but when the standard of competition is pretty good (admittedly for a pub league!) and people tend to respect the standard raise of 3xBB as "good hand" sort of territory I thought 5xBB would be enough! I can understand him calling because calling 200 to win 1300 isn't a bad move preflop with reasonably high suited connectors, but I only wish the flop had given him 2 pair instead of the draws he had! Agree u want some kind of action with Jim Jeffries....low action tho. You did have the chance to peel a card off for 200 after flop to see if a diamond came off and make large bet on turn if no d (you prob wouldnt take him for str8 draw at that point) even with the view to hoping it would come Q/K/or A to let someone else catch up and think they were ahead with a high pair or 2 pair. the other guy may have just decided he was going for it ...regardless of your play I often limp with jacks and chuck em if A/K/Q appears on flop unless just me and 1 caller

Tazio
Changes from day to day. Nominally 42 hours a week , normally more. 6 day weeks as well though up until Saturday I hadn't had a day off for 3 weeks, 2 weeks of which were out the country. So hours travelling to work did count on that occasion. Come July and August I'll go up to 13 out of every 14 days and average 60 hour weeks. I should have stuck in at school I think.
