126 Years Ago today Hibernians 7 Heart of Mid-Lothian 1. End of Hibs' Derby Domination

James McGhee (future Hearts manager) scores 5 goals in first 20 minutes. Overall in 1886-87 Hibs W4 F20 A4.

 

That included a 5-1 victory on their route to winning the cup.

 

What is significant this was the high point of Hibs' domination' in the early years of the Derby winning 24 out of 40 completed games.

Hearts would knock the cup holders out in a replay the following season and the rest as they say is History

 

2 years later Celtic would poach their best players to form their initial team.

 

5 years later they were 'defunct' for 18 months or so.

 

Hibs would only have 2 spells of 'prolonged' domination again in the fixture

 

in the 1920s and

James McGhee was never accepted as Hearts manager. He broke a Hearts players leg. Which was never forgotten by the fans.

 

IIRC senior players also objected to him.
