Before the League cup final, the most important match of the season, I thought it would be good to look back and see what the season has brought for the youngsters so far. And its worth to take a step back and appreciate what they have achieved.

This season we have 7 academy players who have made their debut. Callum Patterson, Dale Carrick, Jamie Walker, Callum Tapping, Dylan McGowan, Billy King, Brad McKay. Out of that seven, five have played in at least one derby (so a high pressure match.) And so far we are only into mid March, so there is always the possibility of more debuts in the final games of the season. The good thing has been every player mentioned above has shown some potential and has played more than a few games (apart from McKay who only had his debut at the weekend but could start in the final.)

Then comes how many games the youngsters have played this season. Of all the players aged 21 or under, they have made the following number of apperances this season in competitive games:

Callum Patterson: 27 (4 of which were from the bench)

Jamie Walker: 19 (7 of Which were from the bench)

Scott Robinson: 18 (9 of Which were from the bench)

Dylan McGowan: 17 (9 of which were from the bench)

Jason Holt: 16 (4 of which were from the bench)

Kevin McHattie: 15

Dale Carrick: 12 (10 of which were from the bench)

Callum Tapping: 10 (1 of which was from the bench)

Fraser Mullen: 9 (1 of which was from the bench)

Billy King: 6 (2 of which were from the bench)

Denis Prychynenko: 4 (3 of which were from the bench)

Brad McKay: 1 (which was from the bench)

So it shows the majority of them (all bar 4) have had at least 10 games which they have featured in and Patterson's 27 games is staggering considering he has been out since mid January. If we do win on Sunday with some of these players playing then it has been a real credit to them. They have come into a troubled season and played a number of games, This is something they will be able to build on next season, even the ones out for the rest of this season. It has also been good to see some of the next generation on the bench as well even if they haven't made an appearance such as Adam King and Sam Nicholson.

Excellent reading. A fantastic team in the making for the future. Huge credit must go to the young team for stepping up to the plate this season.

The under 21's and the other youth teams must be buzzing knowing theres REAL opportunity round the corner to be running out in the first team at Tynie, seeing how many young players are breaking into the first team and doing great
