Carl Fredrickson
If you are in Edinburgh, pop into Richer Sounds. Great advice without any push sales talk.

cosanostra
if i had the room i'd get a record player. i have boxes of vinyl, old beatles and elvis stuff as well as loads of german imports from the 70s. i would love to get them valued as well, but no idea how to go about that 99.9999% of old Beatles and Elvis stuff is worth buttons. It was so popular that everyone and their maw owned it so it's so common. If you want to price some of your stuff, have a wee look at www.discogs.com and check out what you have and what people are selling for.
Craig_
The Project decks are very good. Got one in the house, sounds magic. Quite steep in Richer Sounds and you might need a phono amplifier as well, so probably better checking Gumtree or EBay as mentioned above. Just checked Gumtree and there's someone selling a Linn Basik for ?300! Nice.
cosanostra
Technics and Vestax make the best tables. I would only use Technics but I've heard that Vestax are nice too.
JamboInSouthsea
Thanks for the tips so far but would be great if anyone could give us a heads up on brands and stuff and sorry for calling them vinyl plates will use turntables now Really depends on how much you want to spend and whether you want brand new or 2nd hand, prices range from about ?20 up to ?60k+ Also if your amp doesn't have a dedicated phono input you will have to get a phono-stage pre-amp otherwise the sound will be too quiet to hear. Remember to check the serial numbers which will tell you what pressing you have as this is very important to collectors...as well as condition of course. robbo1874
Maybe try AV forums. I would be careful with gumtree, there's a hell of a lot of Idiots! Back in the day it was SL 1200's. Now I've just got one of they turntables that attach to laptop. Not great for 60's/70's little label productions. I would love a record room. That would be luxury. Jambos_1874
If you are in Edinburgh, pop into Richer Sounds. Great advice without any push sales talk. My Dad bought a record player from them a few weeks back and the staff were really helpful. I think the brand was "Cambridge Audio" or something like that and it produces a crystal clear sound. I've always meant to get one. Would be interesting to know if they are any good. My old man got one about 2 years ago to convert his hundreds of vinyl on to recently acquired I pod - course he waited for me to go home for a visit so I could help him convert the whole dammed lot !! - anyway the quality was surprisingly good. I would imagine that the quality has improved on them since then, as these things tend to do so may be while worth a look
Hugh Watt
if i had the room i'd get a record player. i have boxes of vinyl, old beatles and elvis stuff as well as loads of german imports from the 70s. i would love to get them valued as well, but no idea how to go about that Beatles and Elvis stuff is a total minefield but the two things that can give you a quick indication of their worth is 1) Condition 2) is it a first / early pressing? (which you can check by reading the matrix number in the run-off groove). Condition is really important though, basically you can have the rarest record on the planet but if is scratched to death and sleeve worn and torn it will be worth next to nothing. There are numerous specialist Beatles and Elvis websites that you can check for all the pressing details etc, but it is a fair old slog. Your imports - they should be easier to value and are pretty likely to be worth a bit more - especially as import singles usually had pic sleeves whereas the UK equivalents back in the 70s hardly ever had pic sleeves. The quickest (if costly) way to check your stuff is to buy the 'rare record guide' book produced by record collector magazine. Their price estimates can be cack I must admit in areas where they are not experts, but the convenience of thumbing through a book is far quicker than typing in searches for each record you have into a website. But if you do want to do it online, check ebay 'completed listings', or as somebody suggested 'discogs', but the best one for me is http://www.popsike.com/ which is basically an archive of rare records sold over the internet. Good luck!

Surely only the case for DJ turntables? For HiFi you would be better starting by looking at a ProJect Debut (http://www.whathifi.com/review/pro-ject-debut-se3)or Rega P3 (http://www.rega.co.uk/html/p3-24%20colours.htm) Both excellent for the money. Have owned both at various times, great record players. Possibly not in the luminous green though...
BigMDV
Getting all nostalgic here I loved my records It seems a bit ironic how the music industry embraced digital technology as the way forward, for quality and price etc Now they complain about losing money hand over fist to music piracy, it did exist on vynyl but only in the form of bootlegs (remember them?) usually bought by hardcore collectors only

BigMDV
True. I'm guessing it wasn't as big a problem as illegal downloading though
