Somewhere between a roll and a pastry, nice and salty and loaded with fat.

Everything a Scotsman needs. Fire in aboot them, Aberdeen has the best ones by a long long way.

Thain's all night bakery on George St (Aberdeen) - that's the place for your cheap butteries. And a 3am steak pie. And a pizza pie.

Go to Aberdeen and ask for a roll and you'll get one of these beauties.

Ask for a buttered roll and you'll get a buttery with butter on it. They honestly don't care about calories and cholesterol.

If you're in Aberdeen and want a conventional roll, you have to ask for a "softy".

I kid you not. They're that weird up there.

And here is one of the badboys in question

Can't you just smell the lard?

This is totally true. I was in a bakery in Torry once and asked for a bacon roll - they gave bacon on a buttery, complete with butter and sauce.

Thought my heart was going to give up.

Thains is indeed excellent- used to be a frequent visitor when i lived on that side of town. Not a massive fan of butteries- didnt stop me anihilating two of the things at 4am this morning though.

Are good if theyre fresh, but the last few ive had have been like doorstops
