The fixtures have been announced for the U20 League for 2012/13. Hearts are at home in their opening fixture against Aberdeen on Wednesday 7th August with a 2pm k.o. at New Victoria Park, Newtongrange.

Anyone know if this is today or tomorrow? If today any updates?

Most of the fixtures seem to be a Tuesday so I would imagine it's today. For some reason I had it in my head that the U20s would be playing home games at Tynecastle, kinda disappointed to see it's out at Newtongrange.

Previously the Hearts youth teams played for several years up at Newtongrange when the likes of Locke, Ritchie, Severin, Naysmith, Neilson etc were bairns

It's tomorrow, friend of mine is the referee

It is tomorrow at 2pm at Nitten - Aberdeen ICT and Ross County are getting dispensation from the SPL to play their games in the afternoon due to travelling at night in the winter, overnights in hotels etc

Presumably as there will be a very low crowd Hearts have decided to play away from Tynie to save the pitch?

I think it's three, which was one of the reasons that the managers were so annoyed about, they're argument being to just make it a reserve league instead

Finished 3-1 to Aberdeen who fully deserved their win. Two of Aberdeen's goals were scored by their overage players Joe Shaugnessy and Nicky Low while Declan McManus got the other. Dale Carrick scored a late consolation for Hearts.

Hearts may have to face up to similar difficult games depending on their team selection. While Hearts selected Dylan McGowan and Danny Grainger as their overage players, they were without Holt Walker D Smith McKay Paterson, McHattie, G Scott, B King, and Keegan who would all be eligible to play at this level.

After a bright start by Hearts with some neat passing by Callum Tapping and Adam King, Aberdeen started to dominate after the first 20 minutes or so without creating many clearcut chances. Nicky Low controlled the midfield while the pace of Ryan Fraser on the Aberdeen right proved a handful for Danny Gainger, so much so that the full back was booked for a clear trip on the winger.

The second half continued as the first had finished with Aberdeen on top and Hearts restricted to the odd breakaway mainly through Sam Nicholson. Hearts conceded a poor first goal after 57 minutes. A corner was headed in by Shaugnessy from six yards despite the presence of Hearts defenders and the keeper stuck on his line. Aberdeen went two up after 83 minutes when Declan McManus beat Fraser Mullen on the left then hit an angled shot that Jack Hamilton couldn't keep out at his near post. With three minutes left Nicky Low scored a fine third for Aberdeen, picking the ball up in the centre circle, he beat a couple of men as he drifted to his left before firing in a shot from the edge of the box.

Hearts got their consolation in 92 minutes after a neat passing move between Mullen and Tapping set up Carrick for an easy finish from six yards.

This looks like a very youthful team. Is Darren looking to blood a lot of players and perhaps sacrifice results.

Think one of the posts above outlines the players missing so some 17's drafted up.

Any info why they weren't playing FF?

Holt, Walker, Smith, I believe played in the bounce game against St Johnstone on Monday. Paterson and McHattie played with the 1st team on Saturday. McKay, G Scott, B King and Keegan I believe all have some injuries. McKay - broken/not broken foot, King went off after 5 mins of the last friendly against Dalkeith, I don't know the others problems.

Grainger, Mullen and I think Tapping also played in Monday's game so it wasn't ideal preparation to play twice in 48 hours. However, it won't harm their overall fitness levels as the season progresses.

It's early days and we don't really know how each team will approach the U20 League, either playing it as a reserve set up with more experienced players and utilising the flexibility of overage and substitution rules or just as an extension of the Academy programme with a mix of players from U17s up..
