Anyone remember them, or still a fan?

They've been (imho) criminally ignored and under-rated in the UK (though moderately successful across Europe), probably because they've never been easily pigeonholed by a British music press content merely to promote the fashions of the day.

They've been variously labelled electronic, avant-rock, punk jazz, goth, neo-classical, musique concrete - and none are even half-way adequate. And they've been seen as too 'arty' - which is fine by me, I'd rather devote time to a group who constantly evolve and don't have much truck with commercialism than the lumpen careerist rock-by-numbers that predominates in the UK.

TBH, I can't think of any other band who've had a more varied and productive history yet received so little press acclaim for their efforts (not that they've actively sought it).

Anyhoo, for anyone who's even moderately interested, the first ever book on the band has just been published.

"Music for Vagabonds - The Tuxedomoon Chronicles" by Isabelle Corbisier is a whopping 476-page doorstop of a book that should really whet the appetite of folk who loved earlier albums like 'Half Mute' or 'Desire', or even discovered the band through DJ Hell remixes of 'No Tears'.

It's also probably the most wide-ranging, entertaining and comprehensive music biography I've ever read.

You can find it on-line at Amazon - I haven't seen it for sale anywhere else....

Or if they're completely new to you, check out their myspace page...

That song you put on the Hit or miss thread (it was a miss for me) you dewcribed as atypical.

Is there any youtube footage of something more representative? Or a link to their myspace pages?

Here's their myspace page with a few tracks to stream...

Tons of live stuff on YouTube, but typically poor audience sound on most, so I'm not going to recommend anything there.

There are some video segments that are worth a look though -

Jinx - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ptNZu_EAMY

Shot by the same guy who shot the early Residents videos, and banned in Britain because it was (erroneously) thought to refer to H-Block dirty protests (see how insular the UK can be).

Desire -

A segment from the Jean-Michel Basquiat-starring Downtown 81 film.

Bonjour Tristesse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEyHXR3ZS8c

Off Holy Wars, the same album as the track you didn't like...

The Waltz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VoeVWvz-fY

Also off Holy Wars, just found this weirdy - someone's looped the Monty Python ministry of silly walks sketch to a mid-80's track. And it works (almost).

All early stuff though - and since they change so much, it's hard to find anything representative...

And you could also check Saltyka's blog....
