Messi is just sublime -- if not the best ever he is on his way to being so.

 

I know it is difficult to compare but in the modern era he has no peers.

 

At times you want to applaud just watching the TV pictures.

Based on that logic, David Villa would be the best in the world - won just about everything there is to win. Fantastic player but can't be mentioned in the same breath as Messi though.
