jose-not that bad

i think the boy gets a hard time. until we start to lose goals because the right winger is roasting him and getting the ball in i think he is easily the best option we have. he gets stick for tucking in the middle and it looks like he is leaving us wide open. this happens when the opposition have the ball on the far side and when the long ball is pinged across the park jose has the pace to be out marking his man when he recieves the ball.

i will admit that he looks a bit panicky on the ball at times and made a few rash clearances yesterday but i think a lot of them were when we were under the cosh for a spell and he just wanted the ball away from our goals. i think he is probably the quickest full back in the league and remember mcgeady who is no slouch never got past him in the 1-1 game.

lets try and get behind him i am sick of the boy behind me who slates him from kick off to final whistle. even when he does something right he is wrong according to him. we are gulity of doing the same to miko and now that we are behind him his performances have improved greatly.

we need to get nbehind every player. i used to be guilty of giving robbie a hard time but have accepted the type of player he is now and he does not make mistakes deliberately. so come on lets stop barracking certain players we do not like, there is plenty time in the pub after the game to moan about them.

He is an awful awful fullback.

I have never ever seen such a positionally inept fullback. Add to that that he's holocaustal on the ball and you really have to wonder how anyone, even Vlad, ever rated him at ?2M.

I've been Robbie's biggest critic but he looked twice the fullback Jose did yesterday

Jose Goncalves was terrible yesterday, lets face facts.

The worst performance I've seen from a Hearts full back since, ehm, ... ... well last week, Neilson against Motherwell.

Maybe with coaching he'll improve. But if Celta Vigo want to come back in with a seven figure bid I'd be inclined to sell.

For what its worth i don't think Jose was that bad yesterday. He made a couple of mistakes over the 90mins. However did the right winger actually create any chances or force any saves out of banks ? I think we always need a scapegoat and it seems like its Jose's turn.

The one thing i would say about Jose is,he could afford to get a bit tighter on the man he is marking as he matches any winger for pace anyway and therefor could afford to be right on top of the guy, even if the winger was to turn him Joses pace would get him back.

I'm not looking for a scapegoat, we won after all.

Jose had a nightmare yesterday. That's all I'm saying. He plays like that at Hampden in a couple of weeks, and we'll lose 3 or 4 goals.

Scapegoat?! We won didn't we?!

All im saying is a good right midfielder/winger with a final delivery would tear him up for arse paper and cause us huge problems

Over the 90mins i don't think he had a "nightmare" he made some very good tackles and interventions. He did make a few mistakes though so i am not saying he was great. I will also say again their right winger depsite all his possession created nothing for hibs. I like to think that was down to Jose's pace and strength. :)

I know the guy is not the complete footballer however i think there is enough there to work with. With the right coaching he could go on to be very good for us IMO.

That is utter tripe IMO.

He is good, did he cost us a goal? How many times did Morais (divin bas) get passed him?

He didn't cost us a goal no, we kept a clean sheet I believe.

However the space he gave their (thankfully) useless right mid was frightening

Benji missed a sitter with a fresh air swipe from one of the times Morais got away from Jose though.

The space he gave him ? Where was driver ? How about stopping the passes before they even got to the winger, who's fault was that ?

The winger was playing on the space between Driver and Jose the midfield should have stopped the constant flow of passes to him. If jose had moved up to mark him tighter he would have left us short at the back IMO. He done the right thing, kept his position and used his strength and pace to make sure he did not create.

I think he could defo get a bit tighter,he seem to wander aimlessly into the centre half positions a hell of a lot and when the ball is played to the winger he has got a good 30 yards of clear pitch to attack the fullback.

I sit in the Gorgie stand and looking down the pitch and the amount of room Jose gave Morais first half especially was criminal. Morais kept pretty wide while Jose was far too far off him almost at the D on our box at times. A better team/player would have punished him. He seems to have good games then equally bad games on a pretty regular basis. Should never be considered for central defence cos he cant head the ball and IMO his weaknesses are worse than his good points at LB. He always strikes me as more of an athlete than footballer.

It is the left fullbacks job to mark the attacking right midfielder, not the left mids.

Jose for some reason thinks he should come inside EVERY time the opposition attack. It was noticed by the management and right after HT Frail told Ritchie to have a word and it looked like Jose was giving the '10 mins' shout ie. improve or your off son

He was poor thankfully without being punished

However, I was talking to a few hibbies in my local and they had thought he was one of our better players

not just a game

I sit in the Wheatfield and looking along the back four it is clear how Jose gets dragged more into the middle. RN plays ahead of the rest of the defence and this pulls the other three right. This leaves the switch to any right midfielder/winger an option.

I think the stick Jose is getting is harsh, I agree there is room for improvement but also agree that there should be more support offered by Driver in the final third.

you're correct...I think big Jose did OK against a good winger in Morais...I'd hate to think how Wallace would have done (although Wallace did OK when he came on) :)

I think that there is a right time for Goncalves to tuck in, usually when the ball is on the opposition's left side. Makes the side more compact, and with his pace he has the chance to cover for our centre halves if a player gets past them.

But he is tucking in when the opposition have the ball in either the middle or the right side of the the park. Coaching should help here, but I'm not sure we have any decent coaches.

I just don't understand how not costing us a goal warrants a 'good performance', its like when Kurskis played last week.

imo we should more be looking at how Jose played and noting the fact that a better right winger would have caused us serious problems. It needs sorted.

New LB please Mr Romanov

He only really had one year at a decent level (when he was excellent with us) before his sad injury though didn't he?

Totally agree, I sit in Section Z of the Gorgie and the gaps that the Hibs winger was finding were criminal. A Chesney, JC or any half decent winger would only dream about having that much to work with.

He has been lucky recently as the opposition has yet to find him out but any half decent manager in the SPL with be watching this.

Two new full backs now, and if Irish Alan is available, please grab him.

Still should be able to teach a fullback positional sense and when to pass the ball and basics that come with defending,he was also a fullback at Dundee before we got him remember.

I completely agree.

We have had Jose for 2 years now, and he hasn't been injured for all of it.

Are our coaches spread too thinly? Do we need a specialist defensive coach or a specialist strikers coach? We have a specialist goalie coach, why not other positions?

jose was the worse hearts player by a country mile, apart from having a head like a biscut tin.

he kept wandering in- field ,and was giving the hobo number 12 loads of space,it's a good job he was rank or we could have been in big trouble.

One point to note is that Berra and Banks continually scream at Jose to tuck in ! Could understand if we tactically decided to play with a very narrow back 4 and with a midfield 5 having our wingers track the opposition's wide players but we don't do the same on the right hand side with Robbie ????

He's either a full-back who drifts in too much, or a centre-half who can't head the ball.

I'm not sure which he is to be honest.

My favourite Jose trick is where, when he's unchallenged in the air, he tries to head the ball for distance and presents it to the opposition - even when several Hearts players are standing in reasonable proximity for him to nod it down.

As has been mentioned before, however, if being a full back simply relied on ability to hold off an opponent while shepherding the ball out for a bye, Jose would rank as the world's best.

I think that the team is essentially playing a back three when in posession with Robbie told to push up.

It strikes me as a little naive of the supporters to think he is just simply too daft to stay out wide all the time. It's clearly part of the tactics to have him as a left-back-cum-left-centre-back.

Questionable tactics? Perhaps. Purely down to Jose not being able to resist the temptation to tuck in? Unlikely.

Jose was pretty horrible yesterday. Positional sense was atrocious. He was not helped out by Driver though, who rarely tracked back, or just left Morais alone when jose was covering infield
