systemx
Winos,in my youth a common term for those who regularly imbibed, were they killed off by Alkies and Jakies as you never hear or read about them anymore?
Brandt
Nowadays with the crazy alcohol types you can buy, ie white ciders buckfast have pushed winos to a new level. So society needed a better describing word, hence jakes. Winos seems posh for them now. I'm too drunk myself at the moment. The jake that iam. Funny that we say jakes nowadays. Is it because Jake is a common name in the drink/drug problem society? Where did it come from?
Das Root
Jake was a Jamaican ginger extract, marketed and sold as a medicinal tonic. Around 70% proof it was a quick and cheap way to get drunk, ie "jaked" and those who partook were referred to as "jakeys".
southside1874
Jakey from James and jacobite. Folk that supported James and the Jacobites lost everything and therefore turned into Jakeys. PS..winos also from the same era that James bought huge amounts of Claret from Bordeaux and his supporters drank his tipple. I think
