I take your point about the overreaction, however I can also see the other side.

We are not cup specialists but we should still be beating a team bottom of the first division. Your point about the League Cup is not, in my view, correct though. Silverware is silverware and is only one of the two ways we can win something each year.

Hearts "fans" settling for second best.

Hearts "fans" thinking we are too big to win the league cup.

Hearts "fans" thinking it is acceptable to lose to a side of Ayr's level.

Hearts "fans" criticising others who have higher standards and expectations of their team, who want to see value for the wages we pay, who will not settle for anything but 100% from the players and coaching staff.

If you want to follow a club like that, go and follow that lot across Edinburgh. :rudi:

What a load of shite. If it doesnt bother you that we just lost Ayr, never mind in the cup, the fact that we lost should at least bother you. I agree, dont get your knickers in a twist, but to be happy or even not caring is daft, in my opinion. Strange that you think you have to be a cup specialist to beat Ayr. I was thinking that we were an SPL side who had visions of actually doing something this season.

discussing the result with a couple of work mates last night and given that we are all of a certain age we seem to have changed our opinions on what we call success

it used to be as one poster says beat the hibs and get into europe each year

but this has now been replaced with, realistically we only have two chances of silverware both cups and reguardless of prestige we would love to see Hearts winning either or both

it might not be popular but given the choice of winning the league cup or european football I`d rather have the trophy thanks

spot on, it is ok to be pissed off at the result and expect Hearts to do better but what I can't take is the over the top woe is me reaction to it all that some people seem to take after every defeat. As is football's nature there are no guaranteed victories, anybody can beat anybody on a given day and although on paper Hearts beating Ayr should be a formality, when the draw was made this was recognised as a tricky fixture albeit one we should win. Yesterday that didn't happen and I can't hide the fact I'm disappointed as I want to see Hearts win a cup, any cup wee or big but I've seen us knocked out by smaller teams before and will surely will so again in the future, it happens we may not like it but we at least have to acknowledge it

On the other foot, the people purposely coming on not giving a toss, for want of a better term thats just ****

Just wow.

We should be reaching, at least the quarters of both cups, if not the semis. The only real competition we face should be the OF and maybe dundee utd.

Well heres something to be thinking about..... how do you intend on being in Europe if the only games you want to win are against Hibs?

Last time I checked, you neeed a heap more than 12 points to have that honour.....

Spot on. We generally finish 3rd every second season on average anyway and we pretty much expect it at the beginning of each season but imo qualifying for Europe is pretty pointless these days for a couple of reasons: the Europa League is a shite competition and Scottish teams are just not good enough to compete at this level (OF included) even though it is vastly inferior to the Champions League.

So, yes, I'd happily take bottom 6 and win the Wee Cup. Europe is just a platform for us to embarrass ourselves (as we have done the last two times we've played in it).

I am pissed off with the result, but then again it didn't come as a big surprise tbh. Saying your are content at humping the wee team and gaining a Europa league spot is showing a real lack of ambition. I hate Hearts losing, no matter the competition. We should be challenging for everything, because cup final days do come rare to us.

But that isn't how it plays out, is it?

For the record: between September 1984 and May 1998, Hearts played in a total of four finals and ten semi-finals. Since then, we've played in a paltry one final and seven semis.

And why? Well, I don't think it's that much of a stretch to conclude that, especially after what happened in May 1986, the whole club became consumed by a yearning for silverware which became its entire raison d'etre. Once that desire had finally been fulfilled, what then?

As well as having reached one League Cup final since 1962, for God's sake - one final in half a century! - the change in our Scottish Cup record since 16 May 1998 is what most alarms me. Here's our record between 1986 and 1998:

RU, SF, SF, QF, QF, R3, SF, SF, QF, SF, RU, R4, W.

In 13 seasons, we reached the last four or better on no fewer than 8 occasions. But look what's happened since:

R3, QF, QF, R4, R3, R4, SF, W, R4, R3, R4, R3, R3.

Just two semi-finals in the last 13 years. Pathetic. And in more recent times, how often have we even equalised in Scottish Cup games which resulted in our exit? I can't recall the last time we did so. Instead, we've basically gone down without a fight over and over again.

What's that people say about being careful what you wish for? Because something about HMFC changed irrevocably on that beautiful summer's day 13 years ago - and it doesn't seem that we're ever going to get it back. :(

An alarming number of people seem to base their entire self-esteem on the game by game fortunes of their football club. Something seriously wrong about that IMO. :ninja:

Heh - I knew someone would point that out! But the only way of me drawing a direct comparison with the past was to treat the present day last 32 as round 3 - even though I know it's round 4 nowadays. It'd have been too confusing otherwise. :)

to win in Scotland you have to beat the oldfirm, Hibs are just an annoyin wee pishy club we have the misfortune of sharing a city with. I couldn't care less if we never played Hibs again, the sooner they're relegated the better. You need to have more ambition than beating that shower. Celtic and Rangers are our main rivals, beating Hibs is all good but that's about it.

Europe was ok years ago, now it's a money-making farce, the rich get richer and stuff the rest of us.

Exactly, but some on here seem happy that a club paying the third highest wages in the SPL can be dumped out of the cup by a side like Ayr and a good season is beating Hibs and scraping third. Hope no players are on here if that is the fans's attitude.

We will just set you very achievable targets lads, beat the Hibs, get into Europe and when you get there we don't mind if you take 5 off Spurs, its all good, just pick up your wage, do the minimum and that will do.

No wonder this country is in the state it is in with attitudes like that.

Actually we generally finish 4th on average although we've only actually finished precisely 4th on one occasion in the last 10 years when a decent Hearts season was narrowly eclipsed by Aberdeen's best season of the Century so far.

I have to agree with a lot of what you say. My biggest gripe is the wage issue. We pay players a very good wage, and whilst losses, such as last nights, will happen to the best of teams, it was the manner and attitude of a few players that peeved me the most. We are a club 30m in debt, we cannot continue as we are, paying the wages we do, with little or no success. A decent cup run can generate extra income and is a moral booster, given the fact we know we aint going to win the league.

I agree with Vlad when he says, "why should we settle for third?" so did the majority on here, yet when we have defeats like this, we are supposed to just brush them off. I agree, that losing the plot or calling for the manger to be sacked is stupid, but the fact we lost to Ayr should be treated as a failure and not meerly dismissed. The players should hang their heads in shame. I hope we can learn from this and the players do the right thing, by getting it together for sundays trip to St johnstone and bagging three points.
