Nelly Terraces
Anyone going tonight to the see the purveyors of REAL hardcore punk (not that new pash) par excellence scare the living crap out of folk. They make clowns like Gallows (thats thrash, not punk, sorry, massive difference) sound like the punk fakers they really are. If anyones too young to know who Discharge are, but likes their punk, get along, you won't be dissapointed. Probably the most intense, blistering sound and brutally frank and disturbing lyrics ever committed to wax. Put it this way, if you think that utter pash MTV fluff like Good Charlotte or Offspring is punk then stay away as you'll be well out yer depth here. Cheers. NT OI!OI!OI! K1874M
No because Im going to see real purveyors of Hardcore techno... BEN 9MM (Hangover/Analog Replicant // France) -- Live PA ? Scottish Debut http://9mm.free.fr Ben 9mm joined the French underground rave scene in 1996, and since then has thrown and played at parties across France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Austria and Poland, releasing about 20 different vinyls along the way. Making the journey from France for his first appearance in Scotland, Ben brings with him a live PA incorporating hardtek, hardcore and hip hop influences SE?OR SCRAM (Life4Land // Brighton, England) ? Scottish Debut http://www.myspace.com/senorscram ?Ska-influenced jungle and breakcore? is one way of putting it, but Se?or Scram?s tunes are in a world of their own. This clever producer incorporates many influences, with the end result being heavy mashed up ***** skankin party music. VANDAL (Kaotik Soundsystem // Newport, Wales) ? Scottish Debut http://www.myspace.com/kaotiksoundsystem Vandal has been a regular fixture in the free party scene in Wales and Bristol since Kaotik Soundsystem was founded in 2004, taking his spiral hardtekkery to parties up and down the country and, more recently, to the continent. One of the UK?s best hardtek exports.

Sadly im too young to know who discharge are Not having a go at you mate when I say this but this is how I feel: Gallows are just a thrash metal act pretending to be punk. I dunno what it is with these bands, why their scared to actually have a sound of real punk? Probably cos it's not commercially viable or too MTV unfriendly. Thrash to me, it's just a bunch of middle class kids trying to prove how 'alternative' they are, but failing badly. Metal is pash. I'll bet Gallows have heard every single thing Discharge have done yet dont have the bottle to do what they did, i.e be overtly political and have something to say, everything bands like Gallows do, it's all too polished and thought out (prob by some record company execs) for me. Doubt you'd find the following lyrics on a Gallows lp: War's No Fairytale Government and queen are your only enemies Dont be fooled by their plastic smiles War's no fairytale, guns and bombs aren't ****ing toys They don't wanna know your views of war They never stop to think about you War's no fairytale, guns and bombs aren't ****ing toys They want you kept in the darkness of the realities of war War's no fairytale, guns and bombs aren't ****ing toys Meat flung yards apart from bodies Are typical sights of war War's no fairytale, guns and bombs aren't ****ing toys or how about this lauaghalong number.... geddy
"Thrash to me, it's just a bunch of middle class kids trying to prove how 'alternative' they are, but failing badly"..... Sorry Nelly, I like a lot of your posts but I think this is nonsense. I have NO idea which thrash bands are "middle class" or "working class", to be honest there is not that much a difference between the 2 groups. However Thrash has bands that also "tell it like it is". Punk does not hold the high moral ground on this. I can understand someone getting of on the vicious punk stuff, and indeed some of the writers/lyricists are pretty good. But so are many of the thrash outfits. Can I give say just 3 examples of what I consider great thrash lyrics. All on different subjects....religion, pollution and parents indoctrination of ignorance (see Rankers and Tic fans in Scotland for a good example or BAD should I say?) Read Between The Lines by Slayer Evangelist you claim God speaks through you, Your restless mouth full of lies gains popularity. You care not for the old that suffer, When empty pockets cry from hunger. Penniless from their generosity, Sharing their money to quench your greed. Searching for the answer to their prayers They cry their last wish of need. Save me. His spirit lives and breathes in me. The almighty transformed to your screen. The meanings lost in its translation, No holy words, describe his deception. You say you'll help us find the lord, Tell me preacher how do you know A simple quest for a visible savior, To lead us through our final prayer. Save me. Send your donations, Contribute to the cause. Luxuries, Your righteous reward? Praise the lord, praise god, Is what you wish to sell. There is no heaven without a hell. In your mind's eye could you truly believe, That by giving you can save your soul, Could you be so naive! You heal the sick,[you] raise the dead, You blind the congregation With the things you say. Religious blackmail a deceit of trust, That death will come and all will be lost. Can you hear the serpents call, Look deep in those deceiving eyes. Ignore the writing on the wall, You should read between the lies. When doubt subsides his honesty, An inquiry, is it blasphemy? Impure the soul, that's made to suffer, No sermons left to hide or cover, An empty promise, lie unfulfilled, To steal a dream or get it killed. They claim your trip to heavens nearby, You may believe it but satan wouldn't lie. Keep It In The Family by Anthrax Mankind, The public enemy's not the man who speaks his mind The public enemy's the man that goes and acts blind Searching for an answer that he'll never find An action from reaction and you can't make a retraction Once you put your head out And then you're blue in the face As you try to state your case You can think with your d*** but it can't shout Yo I try to understand what the hell is going on I can't imagine how things ever got so far gone You separatists, say you want your own state I'll give them a state, a state of unconsciousness Retribution, no solution, Constitution Discrimination, through the nation, raining hatred I yell, when there's schism you must rebel I yell, so you'll hear I yell, I refuse to live, in, your hell I am what you fear I'm the truth, I don't keep it in the family Live your life, take someone else Keep it in the family The real world's outside your door You can't keep it in the family You've got the longest way to fall... Keep it in the, keep it in the, keep it in the, Family (The next bit is a superb commentary and assault on parents teaching hate) "Don't even try to tell me what you think is right When to you blacks are niggers, and Jews are kikes And you expect to be taken seriously But your actions, they're more than curiously Juvenile, you emulate what you hate And you don't even know why you feel this way 'Cause Daddy hated this, and Mommy hated that And your own ability to reason's like a tire gone flat" Yo I try to understand what the hell is going on I can't imagine how things ever got so far gone You separatists, say you want your own state I'll give them a state, a state of unconciousness Retribution, no solution, Constitution Discrimination, through the nation, raining hatred I yell, when there's schism you must rebel I yell, so you'll hear I yell, I refuse to live, in, your hell I am what you fear I'm the truth, I don't keep it in the family Live your life, take someone else Keep it in the family The real world's outside your door You can't keep it in the family You've got the longest way to fall... OK, no sweat Geddy old son, but I think the point is that most post 77 punk (from roughly late 78 onwards) was overtly political and social in it's output and meaning (though this took differing starnds, i.e. anarcho bands, 'street' punk and OI! movements). Most bands took up the mantle of the early bands and took that to a whole new level. Thrash comes from a puerly musical point, and is merely an extension of heavy metal, speeded up, and mainly meaningless in it's political/social overview. Thats just my view anyway. Who cares, it's all different opinions on whats good music anyway Geddy mate. Gig last night was good, and there were a good pile of JT's there. thought Rat did a fine stand in job for Cal, though it's not the same without Cal fronting the band - that blokes lyrical style basically defined the band and he was a top frontman. Rainy wasn't well, hence Oddie doing the bass work. My ears are still ringing. Cheers. NT

Nelly Terraces
Hahaha, good man. Just had a gander on Conflicts website and they were meant to be playing through in Glasgow in April, but they've had to call off as Colin has seriously damaged his neck (all that going mental at gigs down the years no doubt) and the docs have warned him to take it easy for a whole year! Real shame as they are a superb band and a great live proposition. There's some other band playing, including the brilliant The Wall who were one of my serious faves back in 79 - 82. Might think about heading through if it's still going ahead, but with different headliners to Conflict. Cheers mate.
