269miles
Violent conduct , so a red card is correct. It doesn't matter that a Sellick fan ran on the pitch , no player can act like that. Seriously , a red card is correct.
JyTees
I didn't think I'd ever see a ref make as big a tit of themselves as when Gazza showed Dougie Smith a yellow card and then was booked for it. It's just been surpassed! Just goes to show that refs are clearly a different breed! Traffic wardens and Special constables the lot of them. Seriously , a red card is correct. To the letter of the law, fair enough. But surely a bit of common sense would prevail in that situation. Obviously not. Martin
What a ridiculous decision. Although this one may beat it yet....... The only surprise is that it doesn't involve the Old Firm http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dP5rEffhXfo

bertracoon
Wow, those are both ridiculous. The first one. I can't actually believe that anyone actually thought that was violent conduct, he's helping get the game going again. The second one had to be a bribe, HAD to! I P Knightley
How on earth can he be booked for that:eek: It was the combination of baldy heid and ponytail that earned the booking, not the trip on the pitch invader.

For the older viewers of JKB who may remember Shoot ! and 'You are the Ref' , which is now repeated in the Observer every Sunday. This very scenario was mentioned just a few weeks ago - the column is adjudicated by Keith Hackett who is apparently big in the refs world in England. Boring but true. Red card is the correct decision.

redjambo
So what if a supporter runs on the pitch and starts aiming punches at a player? What I meant was that the guy was sent off for violent conduct directed towards "any other person", as the Laws of the Game stipulate. However these rules say nothing about self-defence. Thus under the rules, if a supporter starts laying into the player then the player will not have the right to self-defence. Any violent conduct that the player uses to defend himself (and it would be difficult to use less than violent conduct to stop an attacker in such a circumstance) would see him sent off. Not exactly fair. The rules is an ass.

Red card is the correct decision. Keith Hackett was the man who awarded a penalty to Liverpool whenever an opposing defender so much as breathed on Ian Rush or Kenny Dalglish at Anfield; and also, hilariously, penalised Walter Zenga for steps in the opening game of Euro 88. Hosts West Germany equalised from the resulting free kick. He's a good looking fella too, as you'll see:
Maroon Mayhem
The trouble is that if he didn't give the decision which by the letter of the law is technically correct then he runs the risk of being pernalised by the match supervisor. By sending the guy off at least he can say he's covering his back. Not right but its life unfortunately.
