martoon
Scotland's results aside, I loved the 1978 World Cup. The first, aged 10, that I can recall. Andy Cameron, the ticker tape, the TV feem tune, Kempes, the mad Peru goalie, Willie Johnston, Ally McLoed, the twin Dutch full backs, Archie Gemmell, the corruption (Argentina 6-0 Peru), the Brazil goal disallowed by the Welsh ref... ...and, of course, the World's most famous chain smoker: Cesar Luis Menotti. RIP

RIP The opening stages of that World Cup were sensational, particularly Group 1 with France, Italy, Argentina and Hungary. Some of the matches in that group were just out of this world. One of my favourite World Cups of all time, Scotland’s travelling circus notwithstanding. RIP Cesar.

RIP And being allowed to stay up past my bedtime to watch games that started late (11pm? late for a nine year old on a school night). Loved it. Lambert Simnel
Think I've still got my completed Panini sticker album for '78. Spent virtually all of my pocket money for over two months on that...

It was an epic tournament although it was still only 16 countries.
feej
That was my first recollection of a world cup, 10 years old. Menotti sitting in the dig out smoking away, brilliant. Absolutely loved it, from the TV theme tunes, stadiums and of course the football. Some brilliant teams, players and matches - a world away from what we're served up with these days. Scotland had a good side too but less said the better of our performance.
Daveandal
I wonder who was the last manager to openly smoke on the touchline? Cruyff maybe?

4marsbars
Was it Barry Davies who described him as having a "face like a well-kept grave"? Phrase more usually said of Lester Piggott.
Morgan
1978 was a pretty special year.
