That pic was taken in the late 1950s when Judy had piled on the weight after near death experiences with her liver . Frank Sinatra was a loyal and supportive friend to her and helped her out financially when she hit skid Row. Great guy , Ofcourse that’s a young Liza in the pic too .

That's the problem.  Most people couldn't honestly say they have one favourite.  I definitely couldn't. Several of the names already posted in the thread would be contenders, and I can think of others.

I think that's why people love top 10 lists and stuff like that.

It's true

One day my favourite is Demis Roussos, next it's Steve Ellis, next it's Christy Moore - choices choices. Sandy Denny, Billie Holliday

Who could listen to this performance and not think, for just a few minutes, Tona Arena is the best ever...

I agree.

Although I posted individual singers on another day I could possibly post other singers.

Agreed Uly. Can depend on the mood. Another few!

Glen Campbell

Judy Garland

Dave Coverdale

Dusty Springfield.

Some singers are more iconic rather than the best voices and sometimes it's the songs and the way they are sung. Good thread.

As others have said totally impossible as it changes day to day. However Otis Redding is always the first name that pops into my head when I see questions like this.
You could make a hell of a list just with male soul singers from Motown and Stax. Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Wilson Picket, Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Stevie, Wonder, and many more.

Absolutely - so many

One of my favourites is the criminally underrated Bassman, falsetto, songwriter of Bloodstone  , Charles McCormick - his performance here (live) on Natural High - the first half of this song duo, is amazing, though you need to not look at the outfits!

👍. I enjoy different singers and different genres. Could be AC/DC on Alexa then change to ABBA then on to Leo Sayer and a wee flourish with Whitesnake! 🤣

Robbie Williams cannae sing a note and Elton John, Sinatra and BIng Crosby are tone deaf.

At least Elton can write songs and play piano though and Bing was a great dancer. Crap singers though.

Elton is a rock and roll singer so it's more about delivery than being perfect.

Would say the same about Jagger. Not a great voice but perfect for the band.

:biglaugh: Paddy comes in swinging with both fists! Good man! You could add Neil Diamond to that list, qualifying on the same grounds as Elton - great songs but, if I can get away with them in karaoke, then perhaps the original singing wasn't too great.

A real tough one and some great mentions so far. I'm a little surprised that Robert Plant hasn't been mentioned, given some of the others that have - I'm looking at the David Coverdale mention specifically! Both fine singers and both still going strong.

Bing did quite a few comedy dance routines in the Road movies but could hardly be called a dancer let alone a great one. is Paddy thinking of Fred Astaire. Undoubtedly a great dancer. He could sing a bit too.

For those struggling to narrow it down you could borrow from Sinatra and answer a different question. Who would be the last (singing) voice you would want to hear before you died?

Anyway a good thread and other posters have named many of my other favourite singers.

Yes that’s what I was thinking . He was never known as a dancer .

Picked up a double-a side 7" single of that and The Stranglers cover one year at Record Store Day.  That cover is one of the best of all time.

Isaac Hayes cover of it on Hot Buttered Soul is epic. 12 minutes of lush orchestral arrangement.

I think people may compile these lists in large part on musical taste rather than the qualities of an artists voice and performance. Try a Scottish female who could have been a great, this is a remarkable performance from an 18 year old Lena Zavaroni.

On the subject of different styles etc one of my favourite recordings of all time is Dion and the Belmont's reunion concert Live at madison square gardens 1972 in front of a 20,000 crowd- now there's a concert I would love to have been at. Doo wop at its best

He had a very distinctive voice and kept going for nearly 60 years

Here he is in a performance of a rare song off an album which was produced by Phil Spector (walll of sound). Dion and Spector fell out about virtually everything on the album and it was never marketed so is virtually unknown. But this track shows off his unique voice. Best ever , well no, but best ever doo wop I'd argue for
