There has been talk that Fergie planned to leave at the end of the previous season but as Man City won, he wanted to leave on title. So got that the following season but meant he was not focused on rebuilding the squad. I think Fergie bowed out when he did because he knew despite taking the title this team was aging, on it's last legs and would require a rebuild over at least several years and he was just too old to go through all that again.
