Royal Mail *Special Delivery* Insurance ?

I post a lot of high value items and always use the above service. Twice in the last decade padded envelopes have been delivered with the item missing, the receiver has not been asked for a signature on either occasion. Royal Mail have not honoured their *insurance* saying they delivered a package.

Most recently they said they could not deliver as there was no one there to sign. This was on their web site tracking and no card was left. The receiver visited the sorting office and Royal Mail said the address was wrong ? (having admitted trying to deliver ?) and would not entertain them as they did not have a card, but did have the web site information and tracking number.

As the sender I raised a claim, the item cost £750 and I provided the company receipt for it, which was paid in cash, stated on the receipt. Royal Mail now say they will not pay it and only the £7.35 postage refund. Lost over a month ago before their latest price rise. They are saying they would only accept proof of financial loss by bank statement or credit card

I had the police involved wit previous losses and having phoned the "help line" number garnered the information on why the would not honour their "insurance".

I do not have a house insurance policy or the like I could claim on, but given I need to keep on sending high value items would appreciate any suggestions. To both take the above case further or to insure against further losses.

Use a different carrier?

Yes, but who ?

I bought supplies from USA, New Old Stock, not available as now discontinued, they got here to EVRI as final deliverers and they lost it, in their local depot. Seller refunded me, as its only the sender who can claim a loss, other than buying on ebay or the like.

I do send many items and the lost ones are very few of those sent, but £750 is a big loss to me, especially as they admit to having the item.

Phoned the *helpline* yesterday, they said they would escalate and received a phone call from them this morning. Refreshing to speak to real people and hopefully will get a positive result in the next 10 days. Id retear get the item back than the £750

Sounds like you are running a business. Surely you have insurance?

Its' more of a paying hobby, if I ever made accounts, with the time I spend on this, my income would be around £1.50 an hour 😞

I don't generally buy and sell items, only at shows where cash is more the order of the day for bargaining.

Insurance would be an expense difficult to justify, given mostly very low level, risk of loss. The situation above is , only the third loss in  nigh on 20 years, but quite a significant one and the most expensive, so far.

Royal Mail, have been back in touch, hopefully to move up a gear to find the item they have lost. I would rather that, than the money paid for the item.

Do you pay tax on your paying hobby? 😊

Is the threshold £1000 a month or year for a 'second job'?

So it appears no one has had issues with Royal Mail Special Delivery and can offer any relevant information or assistance.

Kickback used to be good for this sort of information ?

On the claim.

It would be necessary to see the terms & conditions regarding which payment methods are suitable to prove the value of the item at time of purchase.  Have you looked?  If there's nothing in the terms about cash receipts not being accepted then you certainly have a case to pursue.

On the missing items from packaging.  Padded envelopes are completely unsuitable in terms of being secure from damage,  or even tampering.  It would be easier for someone to open and reseal a jiffy if they wanted to steal the contents.  A well packaged parcel can be tampered with but not as easy to disguise.

The recipient might claim a missing item as a scam.  It's crucial to retain the posting advice as that records the weight of the overall package.  You can use this as evidence to catch out a scammer or to show the RM that they have somehow damaged a well secured parcel.

Its a fairly specialised area relating to people selling moderately valuable goods online.  You might have found a better audience on a business related site.

But there is insurance wise.  'Signed for' only offers very limited insurance value.  Special delivery tracking is also much better.

I think I'll get some of those grey plastic posting bags they have, thank you for the suggestion, I had always used padded envelopes.

I was well within the T&C's, just hope they can find the item, given my last conversation with them.

Use Fedex, They are more expensive but your stuff will get to you.

The USA seller used Fedex, who used EVRI for the final failed "delivery"

I send hundreds of high value items per week, nowhere close to £750. RM, UPS and everybody loses a small percentage. Ive found it's hours of work to make a claim and ive never had any insurance or compensation paid out ever. Occaionally a book of stamps from RM when ive jumped through their numerous hoops. I just dont bother wasting my time now, its just not worth the time or effort. Take the hit and re-send is my strategy :(

I hope they pay your insurance, it's an absolute racket and needs investigating.

For expensive items I will post by special delivery. My eBay rating has gone up to 97.8% these past few weeks
