Positive Goal Difference

Recommended Posts

I was just looking at the league table and only four teams have a positive goal difference (see below).

Is that normal? I would imagine the top six would have positive. I just looked at the English Premiership and only 8 teams have a positive GD.

When the top teams hump all the rest in an unbalanced league that's what you get.

Usually only 3. Aberdeen were -4 last season, Hibs-6.

Same the year before.

Wee Mikey

By and large, goal difference relates quite strongly to league position.

As it stands, if 'Well were 6th and Dundee 8th (just transpose them) then it would be 'perfect'.

When the arse cheeks regularly hand out 4+ goal hidings then it’s a given.

the 2 cheeks combined are 100+ goals so that’s why 80% are negative

Perfectly normal, when 4 teams have +124 goal difference, that's got to be reflected in the goal difference of the rest of the league.

I still can’t believe the 3rd placed team last year had a negative goal difference.

Embarrassing.

A continuous positive gd is a good marker for us I think.

Increasing it every season should be something we look at doing and shows some improvement even if it is small steps.

Screwed goal difference like it is is a sign of poor wealth distribution.

Two boring clubs hoovering the revenue and opportunity streams.

Reflected in society too, with many working their socks off and finding themselves with tiny slices of the profits.

The poorest prop-up the rich. That’s the truth of it. The poor go without while the rich have multiple holidays per year.

It's always the same in this league.

A team like Ross County or Livingston could go on a nice wee run of winning 4 games in a row 1-0, and then get skudded 5-0 by one of the Uglies.  So they pick up 12 out of 15 points, but end up with a GD of -1 over those fixtures.  4 draws in a row, and you suddenly have a goal difference of -5 over those fixtures.

Combine it with the fact that most teams take points off each other and it's not hard to see why almost every team that ends up in the bottom 6 generally has a negative goal difference at the end of the season. More often than not, it will be 8+ teams that end up negative.

For the past few seasons, only these teams outside of the arse cheeks have managed a positive GD:

22/23 - Hearts (4th, +6), Motherwell (7th, +2)

21/22 - Hearts (3rd, +10)

20/21 - Hibs (3rd, +10),

19/20* - Motherwell (3rd, +3), Aberdeen (4th, +4), Livingston (5th, +2) - Covid Season, so less games played. You'd have expected those to fall away after the split due to it being so tight.

'Well only had a positive GD last season because of playing the 8th-12th place teams - they were net 0 at 33 games, I think.

Quite true.

The best of the bottom 6 are the most likely other than 3rd and maybe 4th to have a positive GD.  Whereas someone who sneaks into the Top 6 with a low single digit GD will likely see it evaporate.

It's quite grim viewing when you see it happening season after season.

Celtic finishing the season with a GD of +100 must really warm their wee hearts. Then it's our fault when they get skelped in Europe every season...

9/12 teams in the Scottish Premier league are currently on -ve GD  (75%)

12/20 teams in the EPL are currently on -ve GD (60%)

12/24 in the English Championship are currently on -ve GD (50%)

12/20 teams in La Liga are currently on -ve GD (60%)

11/18 teams in the Bundesliga are currently on -ve GD (61%)

10/18 teams in the Frecnch Ligue 1 are currently on -ve GD (56%)

12/18 teams in Portugal's Primeira Liga are currently on -ve GD (67%)

We are certainly high this year (usually we are about 7 or 8 out of the 12 on -ve) but it is not uncommon.  Most league's have the big boys who give the smaller teams rogerings week in week out and most team's outwith the big boys can beat each other on any given day.

None of these other leagues see the 'big' teams playing the others 3 or 4 times.

Dundee are having a great season but could have 7 scuddings (and the 0-0 draw) against the uglies which will not be great for their GD.
