Last Hearts LB to score twice in a game?

Paul Ritchie
Both scored twice wearing no 3 in the 1990s but weren't playing left back.

So last time was George Thomson with 2 penalties

And Nick Ross scored five back in 1884

Though unlikely He was playing what we would think as a 'left back'

Have we ever been awarded 5 penalties in our first 4 competitive matches before?

 

5 in 4 at any stage of the season must be pretty rare, I'd imagine.

Interesting that it was also the first 4 games of a season - and also under Robbie. Must be a reasonable chance of setting a new record with a game against Arbroath. I'd forgotten that 2015-16 opened with 7 straight wins (5 league, 2 league cup) - hopefully we can do even better this time...

I should know this, as I did play this formation in my younger days, but I think a number three was a wing-half in a 2-3-5 setup?

Kenny Black scored a hat trick including  two penalties  but not sure he was playing  left back or left midfield.

Took all our penalties in that era and I can't remember him missing.

Against Dumbarton, 5-1. First hat trick I ever saw. I think Whittaker (or George Cowie) would have been playing so KB was in midfield

Test the historian with this query ... 4 left footed goals in game ( 3 scorers ) 

I know Rudi had a few braces and hat tricks but unusual to see four great goals with the left peg .

Another full back, Bobby Kirk, was the penalty taker before George Thomson. We had some prolific goal scorers in those days, and I always wondered why the let defenders take penalties.

Used to wonder that myself. 

Obviously the two players quoted but Rangers had Eric Caldow on pens. 

Hibs had Joe Davis, Celtic had Tommy Gemmell. I'm sure there's more but they stick in my mind.

You're doing George Thomson a grave disservice. He was not involved in the Peter Swan et al match fixing case and therefore was never suspended.

That's what I thought as well. 

Is the poster not getting confused with former Celtic goalie Dick Beatie. 

Apologies to Dick Beatie if I'm wrong.

Yes, Dick Beattie was involved along with the main players - Peter Swan, David Layne and Tony Kay, all of Sheffield Wednesday. There were several other minor players involved, and the organiser was ex-player Jimmy Gauld. All were banned from football for life and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. The FA allowed the players to appeal their ban in 1971, and several of them played again for a few seasons.

There will be more pens this season but maybe we are seeing the “old firm” argument in effect:

 

The more you are attacking and in the oppo box the more pens you’ll get.

As I said it was a long time ago. I seem to remember George being mentioned at the time although if as you say it wasn't anything to do with match fixing I can't think what it was. Certainly not wanting to blacken George's name as he was a superb full back.

I think Joe Davis was Hibs top scorer one season due to the amount of penalties they got. Hibs had a few players who could dive for Scotland, Stevenson, Cormack, Stein to name but 3.

George Thomson could also play left half and inside left. In fact I think he scored a hat trick one game playing inside left. A goal scoring fullback a few years before Tommy Gemmill.

I think you are right too.

The more you are attacking, the more chance you have of the opposition giving away a foul and penalties.

I think we have seen it already this season.

Im  sure Jim Jeffries  scored a double against Aberdeen in a midweek game mid 70's.  Can't remember if he was left back.
