Devorgilla
Current "When Saturday Comes" magazine has as its "season in brief" the Scottish First Division for 1959-60, when we last won the league. Worth a wee read, even if it is just in the W H Smith "library". Interesting read and particularly that we missed out on back to back league titles the previous season after losing to Celtic on the final day of the season. Is there a book that covers these league campaigns in detail?

Correct, You just know for certain that would never happen in this day and age. Celtic winning a last day meaningless game to hand the title to Rangers

Or am I imagining that ? That's correct. An 8yo me and dad were at Celtic Park that day. Hearts needed Aberdeen to beat Rangers at Ibrox while we had to defeat Celtic. Aberdeen needed to beat Rangers at Ibrox to avoid relegation for the first time in their history. At HT Hearts were 1-0 up on Celtic and Rangers 1-0 up on Aberdeen. By full time Celtic had turned the tables on us and we lost 2-1, Aberdeen had turned the tables on Rangers to win 2-1 and survive. Rangers won the league thanks to Celtic beating Hearts. If Hearts had won that day and following on winning the title the next season it would have been 3 in a row for us. There was also bizarre things happening at the other end of the table that day. Dunfermline had to beat Partick by six goals at EEP and hope other results favoured them. They won 10-2 and the other results worked out for them. In fact we could have won 4 in a row if we hadn't blown the title in 1957 by dropping points in the last couple of games. The end to the 1958/59 season is often forgotten about when talking about dramatic final days but it wasn't just dramatic it was bizarre. Most of that stuff is my memories but the Scottish Football book from 1959 is a good source. Edited May 17, 2019 by luckydug
