Sleep Paralysis

Last night was my worst ever bout of this dreadful condition I have ever had. I get very infrequently usually after a drinking session

Literally felt frozen to the bed with all sorts of scenarios playing out for the better part of an hour where as in reality it wasnt even 5 mins. Thankfully, the missus heard me whimper and shoke me out of it.

Felt like I could barely breathe with pressure on my chest. Can't explain what I was seeing tbh however there was certainly an evil presence being sensed.

I know this is all a well established condition but it is horrid the same. Feel like your mind is messed up afterwards.

My wife actually got this three consecutive nights about a fortnight ago.

She says she feels she is shouting my name, asking me to help her, kicking me and nudging me to bring her out of this. I hear and feel none of it.

We went to the doctor last week and he explained that it is quite common and not dangerous but admitted that it was a very frightening experience. He suggested a more regular sleep pattern i.e. going to bed and rising at the more or less the same time every day and trying not to get stressed.

She was really scared but has not had it again since the three bad nights. As you say, it's only a few minutes but she says it seems to go on for absolutely ages.

I have had this a few times in my life and feel I am shouting out but am actually making no noise.

Only really had this a couple of times that I can remember but the first time it was scary as ****. Felt like I was pinned down on the bed and couldn't move at all. Heart was pounding too. I can relate to the feeling of an evil presence being there because it didn't feel like I was alone. I honestly thought I was being abducted by aliens :D

I used to get this a lot when I was younger, usually after heavy benders of a weekend. My bed used to "tip up" and I could feel myself falling out of it. Other times I just couldn't move. Worst thing about it is you're trying to scream out but you can't, it's like you're unable to use your throat. As you say, you'd end up whimpering until you managed to drag yourself out of it. Brutal.

Used to get this when I was in my early 20s, usually after a nuggets weekend.

Not pleasant when it was happening but the vivid dreams afterwards were pretty awesome.

I also got the feeling of wanting to scream but being unable to make a noise, as described above.

One of my best mates had this a few years ago. He and his family were never short of a bob or two so they got all sorts of doctors and specialists in but couldn't get to the bottom of it. Eventually, we discovered to our horror that his soul had been possessed by a demon.

He wasn't religious in any way but got a priest out to do an exorcism. It's an exhausting process but it seemed to work and after a few hours he seemed back to normal.

That's what we thought anyway. A week later he was found dead in the Water of Leith at Balgreen. He had drowned in two feet of water a couple of steps away from the riverbank.

There were no suspicious circumstances and no sign of a struggle. It was as if he'd just lain there passively while the cold, unforgiving water filled his lungs and squeezed the life out of him.

Anyway, be lucky.

Салатные палочки

I get hypnic jerks often.  Most nights actually.  Can be a pain in the arse but I eventually drift off.

Only had sleep paralysis on a couple of occasions.  The worst one I was dreaming but I felt like I was awake.  There was a few people sitting on my bed having a conversation then they left and I heard the door closing.  I then heard the door opening again and I just felt pure dread.  The bedroom door opened and this giant shrouded figure walks in with green eyes (sounds cliched but 100% true).  I was lying there trying to scream but couldn't and moving was impossible.  I then fell out the bed (in the dream) and woke up.  It was shit scary but I laughed when I woke up, it was so ridiculous the dream.

I always have sleep paralysis and/or night terrors after a big sesh. On their own they're bad enough, but when they're combined it can be hell. Recently my night terrors involved the devil standing at the end of the bed, it was horrific, but then coupled with paralysis. It was a living nightmare.

I've been listening to a singer called Sarah Jarosz when I go to bed over the last couple of weeks and it's actually made a difference. I fall asleep easier, and have a much more peaceful night.

Love Sarah Jarosz. She's been on Prairie Home Companion with Chris Thile over the last few months, really good. Seen her cover of Crazy live at some festival on YouTube? Brilliant.

Correct me if I am wrong but was there a thread on this before on KB? I remember you posting something similar as did I.

I'm going in for a op soon and as the time is getting closer I have been waking up with absolute terror and I am totally pinned on the bed and cannot move. Whilst I am bricking getting my op I cannot believe it's down to that!!!!

Only had it once and I thought someone had broken in. Absolute frozen to the bed trying to wake everyone up, pretty sure I had tears when I eventually woke up.

this scares the shit out of me

Be thankful you haven't had it. Incredibly disturbing.

Fine last night all though the though of it happening again kept me up for a bit. Usually dose right off.

I had it for the first time ever last year after a stag do (huge session)... It was absolutely terrifying. Was trying to scream out to the Mrs but couldn't. Felt like I was fully stuck to the bed for ages. It was probably only a few minutes...

Hope I don't experience it again, but stag season is on the horizon....

Incredibly disturbing doesn't even begin to describe it.  Alim knows.  I've had it happen to me once; I hallucinated a bear sitting on my chest--I could feel its full weight crushing my lungs, as it stared into my eyes, about to rip my face off.  Thankfully, it dissipated within seconds--I didn't experience the version that seems to last minutes or hours.  It's so terrifying because it's so real.

Oddly enough, my wife had that again last night. Thankfully, I wasn't asleep and got her awake within seconds of it starting. The rest of her nights sleep went without incident.

If you'll pardon the expression!

Only to hope she was singing to me live in person.

My boyfriend introduced me to her very recently and I loved her stuff instantly. I don't think I've seen that video - I'll check it out later tonight though. Cheers :2thumbsup:

My youngest used to get this almost nightly when he was age 4-5. Although his was probably more of a night terror as he would be sitting up shouting on us to get the man of his bed, pretty scary stuff, couldn't really do anything to help him other than hold him and comfort him until he woke, usually after a few minutes. Thankfully they stopped not long after starting school.

Doesn't sound like Sleep Paralysis.

I use to get it when I was younger but my parents just thought I had a Vivid imagination :muggy:

Probably stopped around 14 then when I started the bevvy they came back at about 21..

Don't get them frequently. Before the last one I would say it was a good 5-6 months but can go years without having an episode.

Maybe all us sufferers are genuinely possesed. Was what I though when I was younger tbh.

Alim,

after reading through this thread again, we don't think what my wife gets is sleep paralysis in it's true sense either.

She has never had the 'pinned to the bed' thing you mention and has also never had sightings or thoughts of ghosts etc.

Yours sounds a lot worse than hers to be honest.

Take care.

Get it regularly - horrible.

Two tips that work for me:

1) Before you go to sleep, as you lie in bed, nip your skin really hard somewhere - preferably the face - and tell yourself you are NOT going to have these dreams. Sounds utter nonsense - but someone told me years ago that this bit of advice was given to them by sleep experts at the time - and I have found, bizarrely, that it really works for me.

2) If I have them and finally shake myself awake - and go straight back to sleep, I can go right back into it and it's twice as frightening. I get up and turn a light on, and read something (anything) as it stimulates your brain and wakes you properly

Used to get it regularly when I lived with my parents and rarely experience it now that I've moved out. Not sure how to explain that one... mattress?

I get it from time to time. Shit scary and a horrible feeling. What's funny is I've been getting it for over 20 years and must have kept quiet about it for 10 until I found out it's not that uncommon. Normally happens if I'm really tired.

Used to get it a in my 20s & 30s, always from oversleeping. At weekends I would wake up 8/9ish but would just lie in bed trying to get back to sleep, which I usually did, then later on I would be lying there thinking someone has come into my bedroom (I live alone) and I can't wake up, I would get all in a panic worrying that I'm about to get attacked and there is nothing I can do about it. When I eventually woke up I could feel the relief sweeping over me that it had all been a dream, of sorts. Not had it in ages now, might be because I don't like sleeping in too late at weekends now.
