Your employee can take you to court directly for any loss they make directly due to you breaking your contract, I believe. I doubt Tesco would pursue for a shelf stacker though, for example. They would then have to quantify the loss that they have incurred. Really little, if any realistic, prospect of any employer persueing this line of action. You will survive!. You are entitled to earned pay to the date of your leaving and any outstanding holiday pay accrued to the point of termination but not yet taken. That's true, although with the reference the problem always is that you're last employer is under no obligation to provide one and no matter what is actually said in the reference it is always the telephone call that follows it that determines the real outcome.
