This system works passably well in the US baseball system because there's no promotion and relegation. Our local team, the Durham Bulls, have a license with the MLB Tampa Bay Rays, and so basically the entire squad is players trying to get to the big leagues, on rehab from the bigs, trying to restart a career, and so on. It kind of sucks because organizationally wins and losses aren't as important as player development and recovery, but it does mean we get to see outstanding players at fairly cheap ticket prices. If there were promotion and relegation in the system, it would be a catastrophe as the Rays would yank all of the good players up before the deadline and leave the Bulls in danger of dropping, if it mattered. It's a shit enough system as it is, given that a fairly small amount of the country actually has local access to truly competitive professional baseball games (and baseball is so much better in person than it is on TV it's scarcely worth comparing). BK seems to want to replicate this but where the feeder clubs can have the trap door yanked at any moment.

You don't build a good team by chasing off your mid-level performers in the hopes that you're going to be able to find substantial upgrades on all of them. You try to bring in players that improve you and hopefully turn your old starters into squad players. Running off players like Devlin, Rowles, and Grant because they don't match your pipe dreams of what Hearts could be is madness.

Why not? Before you jump in with a reflexive answer, my question is actually about the political reasons behind your statement. In part, I'm asking what are the political reasons that you "can't keep having" independence referendums. In part, I'm asking about an underlying assumption that referendums would continue to be held until such time as Nationalists got the result they want. But why would you stop then? If an independence referendum was carried by a narrow majority, why wouldn't the "losing" side seek to have another one to overturn the decision. What are the political reasons that they wouldn't? What are the political reasons anyone would deny that to them? I'm not challenging your opinion about any of this. I'm asking deeper questions about who gets to decide when the people are permitted to vote on these things, when that can happen, and who gets excluded from that political decision-making process. Those are pretty fundamental questions in any society, especially one that claims to be a democracy.
