About to be agreed. Multi year deal at around $4m per.

Though judging by some of the chat, Trotz might not be enough to keep Tavares there (though this has all the hallmarks of having a look around then deciding to stay put).

Hope Tavares does move (to MTL ).

Gets boring if all the big free agents stay put.

Glad for Barry too. He's getting the deal he really deserves.

Going up a tad over $4m. Biggest increase for around 5 years (I think).

Draft starts tonight. 12.30am our time.

As per, no first rounder for the Pens but we know that GMJR will be cooking up some sort of trade.

Dahlin likely goes first.

Tomorrow, keep your eye out for if (when?) Liam Kirk gets drafted. Young prospect that plays for Sheffield. He's had a lot of press (some OTT) as a Brit possibly getting picked. Some experts say it'd be a waste but he's had a decent amount of scouting that'll be surprised if he doesnt get picked.

Apparently at the GM meeting, there seems to be a big majority who are in favour of banning all hits to the head...

Colorado send the 47th pick to Washington for Grubauer and Orpik, thereby clearing space for re-signing Carlson.

Bettman just pulled a blinder.

Comes on stage to the usual welcome and says - "We have a few things to do for Humboldt. After we do that, you can boo me all night. But I appreciate your enthusiasm."

And they're now giving it him it tight.

And with the first selection in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, the Buffalo Sabres select Rasmus Dahlin from Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League.

Konrad von Carstein

Question for you guys that are more than just fanboys like me.

How does the draft work, no, bear with me....drafting from North American/Canadian colleges etc I can just about get my head round...however, the drafting of Swedes, Norwegians etc how is that controlled?

Supplemental Q, is it worst team of previous season  1st pick, second worst 2nd pick and so on?

Define what you mean by 'controlled'?

On Question 2 - not exactly. To save teams 'tanking' for the number one pick, there's a Draft Lottery, weighted in favour of the worst team, to determine the outcome of who picks where.:

Controlled is probably the wrong word , what is the process for including non North American/Canadian players in the draft system and I suppose how are they rated? I believe a Swede is #1 pick this year?

Thanks for the link will have a look after the Germany game.

Essentially the same rules as North American but a difference in age:

'Any non-North American player can be drafted at any age if they are at least 18 by September 15. If a player is 18, they must declare themselves eligible, but if a player turns 19 by September 15th, they are automatically eligible for selection in the draft. '

There's a transfer agreement between the NHL and International leagues, which allows players who play in those leagues to move.

The Tavares Sweepstakes are well under way. Vegas and Sharks confirmed. Isles have given an 8 year, $88m offer.

Been on a stag do so unfortunately missed all the draft excitement

Was kind of hoping Svechnikov would somehow fall to 3 but that was never going to happen.

Don’t hate the Kotkaniemi pick but I think there were better players available.

Despite the lack of trades, I quite enjoyed it this year. Read quite a number of articles so was slightly more informed than usual. And Burke was quite entertaining in the studio.

Good bit of buzz around Kirk as well, though its irking a few folk that he's being headlined as the first born and trained Brit drafted, when he's third. Articles interchanging Britain with England and thats annoying a few too.

In other news, Carlson gets a new contract in Washington - 8 x 8 the terms.

In other news, the Pens trade Sheary and Hunwick to the Sabres for a fourth (that could turn into a third), in a clear salary dump trade. GMJR is up to something...

Looks like you're signing this year's Karl Alzner

Well there's talk we're after Jack Johnson. :muggy:

Whether true or not is another matter. There's other stories we might be after Rick Nash. :jjyay:

Whatever happens, GMJR is definitely cooking up something.

Yes, that's what I read. I had been slightly concerned we were after JJ.

I heard Nash was wanting to go back to Columbus. Think his best days are behind him. He was fairly dire for the Boo-ins.

Your lot after Voynov.

I'm only wanting Nash because of my mancrush.

(Though he might do well in a bottom six role)

Talk we're after Grabner again. We've been desperate to land him for awhile due to his speed.

CHaracter policy out the window then

It's the only way we'll sign a decent D man. Maybe Bergevin can secure a domestic abuse discount?

I've always liked Grabner but he's turning in to a bit of a Tomas Vanek.

Thats because he had a concussion.

He's just released a PR saying he's unsure if he'll play next year.

The scumbag should be nowhere near the league. Teams clearly putting 'business' first over any concerns over corporate social responsibility.

It just sums up what a bellend our GM is. I genuinely think I could have managed the team better than him.

Looks like Tavares is done on Long Island.

Hope he ****s off to the west. Can't be arsed with Boston or Toronto loading up with even more fire power.

Toronna is where he's apparently off to.

Nice trade with the Jets yesterday for you guys though. ;)

Cap Space Kings!

Actually quite like the look of Armia. He's a better option than Carr who just left the organisation.

Enjoy Armia while you can - seems he away to Vancouver in free agency.

EDIT - varying reports he's both staying and going.

Couple of guys from The Athletic and TSN put it out. Might have been retracted since though.

Do you subscribe to the athletic? Folk on SB Nation/Habfans seem to rate it. Is it any good?

I take it Armia is an RFA?
