Looking for a decent bike shop to purchase a single speed conversion kit for my sons mountain bike.

There was a couple in and arround Davidsons mains, but seem to have closed down.

Over to you guys.

Dougstar.

Ps , Halfords dont sell it.

There is/was a decent bike shop near Whitehouse Loan (or somewhere around the Bruntsfield area) last time I was down. Whether or not they'd have what you're after is only a phone call away. The staff did seem really clued up on bikey matters, I'd have to say.

Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative rings a bell...

Welcome back.

There's a bike shop in Blackhall that replaced the Wee Fella's wheel and he was very reasonable and quick. It''s at the shops half way between The Blackhall Inn? and Craigleith shopping centre.

Normal bike shops most probably don't keep single speed conversion stuff. The Edinburgh Bicycle Co=op are your best bet.

Or you could go to the specialists on line. The best company for SS stuff are On-One, they have a great website. And it isn't just the wheel you need to change, single speed can be a bit tricky to get set up just so depending on the frame. The easiest way could be to go for a slightly longer chain and a chain tensioner. As I said On-One will sell everything you need if you can't get it locally.

thats what a single speed convertor kit will do/have included if its got it all and not just a cog and spacers. you'll actually need to shorten the chain if its been on a geared system. the tensioner will then remove any slack in the chain if the bike has vertical drop outs which i assume it does being a mountain bike.

convertor kit #1 - think macdonalds actually sell this one.

convertor kit # 2 everthing you need inc spacers, cog and tensioner. this kit has a replacment chain if need be and shorter chainring bolts if you want to remove two of the three chainrings that a standard mountain bike will have attached currently.

Yeah but you need to remember that a lot of the "purists" look down on chain tensioners (not literally) as it's a cheat to them. I actually meant that you need to lengthen the chain if you use a tensioner, of course it is a shorter chain than a full geared set up.

Oh and not all mountain bikes have vertical drop outs, my main one doesn't, it's got lovely horizontal track style slots, but I would never make it a single speed. I do have plans in that direction though.

To many hiils in edinburgh for me to consider a single speed tbh, work is about to atrt the cycle to work scheme so I will very soon be getting shot of my way too heavy mountain bike and getting this ! What do the proper cyclists on jkb think of it? Will just be cycling from Leith to the Gyle and mostly on the road!

i was presuming that dougs laddie does not have an old MTB tho and is running around on something a wee bit more modern. I'm aware that older MTB's have horizontal dropouts but they have not been put out on frames for sometime unless your buying a single speed specific MTB frame, 29er or something similar. even danny mackaskill has a chain tensioner on the go.

what single speed you planning? a wee old steel racing frame conversion of some sort or something with a bit tighter clearances and more suitable for use on the track. I have both in the form of a dolan steel FXE for sunny dry days and an old raliegh i have built up for locking up in and running around town and leaving outside the pub etc. both are fixed gear tho not SS.

i'm not a proper cyclist (would never ever admit to be such a curse on society if i was), but....

1) it looks like it costs 500 notes :o

2) it looks like its green :o:o:o

the revolution bikes are pretty good value and will be perfect fo your commute. no point buying a full carbon race bike or something and hammering it everyday in the rain and salt of the city. if your gonna be doing serious miles at the weekend for pleasure then I would drop big cash on that tho.

on the single speed topic I live in glasgow but regularly have my fixed gear in edinburgh and its not too much of a problem on the hills. you quickly get used to it. can do from my folks house at orchard road to st davids harbour in dalgety where my sister lives in 50-55mins no bother which is not bad at all with only one gear. only real hill i have had to get off on in edinburgh is the one at napier craiglockhart campus. arthurs seat is a doable as is the mound and costorphine. just got to build up a bit of leg muscle.

I'm a bit of a retro type so I'm going to build a SS based on an old MTB, I can get a damned good frame for well under the hundred mark and in my dafter moments use it offroad. There'll be savings to be made as I've upgraded a lot on the main bike to XTR so have lots of still nice parts lying around to use on it. Sensibly I should SS my current MTB but it's a wee bit too nice to be fiddling with as an experiment.

like a pace or kona or something?

i had a mint condition kona kilauea until about two years ago that was getting less and less gears on it over time but got rid of it to fund single speed road then fixed gear bikes. i dunno if i could be assed with a ss MTB for actual MTBin on. its hard enough on my full suss bike without the added pain of one gear. I am in the process of buying loads of new kit at the moment as I go to spain in november, sierra nevada, for a week staying and riding with a company called ciclo montana. just bought a new full face met parachute helmut today and need a few more things before then so spreading the cost. innerleithen is gonna get rinsed on saturday then fort william and laggan the following week after that.

Maybe an age thing but I hate the look of bikes like that.

Saddle higher than bars, that's my look.

Yeah, I wish I could afford a Pace!

I'm in negotiations to get an old Bontrager frame from the mid 90's. Failing that something similar, steel though as aluminium is painful enough in Edinburgh without having no gear options.

Though I am considering going 2 x 1 on it and having a double crankset at the front. Will take a bit of working out though to keep the chainline correct and enough tension on the chain.

aye, i had trouble keeping the chain on the kona when i took it down to just the middle ring and 7 speed casette, no front mech etc. would sometimes drop off when i over shifted using the old xt thumbies that have the phantom 8th click. can be a bit of a ballache. making it ss gets rid of all that tho.

been down to east side bike at Montrose Terrace? they have some good frames from time to time. an old kona the last time i was in and a fair few old steel road frames.

I'm not aware of that place, however it's only a few minutes from my house, may pop in out of interest.

In the 70s i had a carlton corsa, that was quality, but nothing on the flying scot.whistling.gif .

And why is my lad doing away with gears, think its a boy thing to build up bikes, and pull them apart.

Was like that myself at that age.

Cow horns, paint spraying, short mudguards, and the 3 speed sturmey archer gears, the memoriesthumbsup.gif

single speed you can can still freewheel/coast when your not pedalling and with a fixed gear you have no choice but to continually pedal.

used to be scared stiff of the idea then gave it a bash and it is a lot of fun. actually find it weird riding a bike with a freewheel now. friends of mine have done Glasgow to Edinburgh and back in a day, and also cycled coast to coast aswell. I'm buckled after about 30miles.

If you're aiming for a fixie and the budget's tight head for the Bike Store - 250 causewayside. They're a bunch of holier-than-thou ****s that run it but they practically give parts away free. There's an auction on Saturdays as well, tonnes of old bits lying around. Vlad should head there, probably pick up a midfielder.
