coppercrutch
Gimme Shelter by the Stones has a great intro, as does Pinball Wizzard by The Who. First that came to my mind as well. Builds up amazingly.
Jaap's Sigh
First that came to my mind as well. Builds up amazingly. It really does. The intro makes the song what it is. Starts of with an air of sinister about it and builds to a classic rock n roll song. Don't write them like that any more.

I P Knightley
The bar has been raised pretty high with Gimme Shelter making it difficult to select another. Before seeing GS in the list, I was thinking Sympathy for the Devil. The Stones certainly had their moments with distinctive riffs... Elsewhere, I like Hells Bells by AC/DC; Layla by Derek & the Dominoes; Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and Money for Nothing out of Dire Straits. Coco
Echo the views on Gimme Shelter. Also Where the Streets Have No Name. Don't know if U2 still do the same when they play it live - but the darkness, red background lights then light up the full stadium as the song kicks in used to be absolutely magnificent. I also think that New Order Regret has an absolutely brilliant intro.
