Whatever takes the quickest

No but in seriousness, I need to wait 18-20 weeks for a simple 30 minute op

What a ridicolous timescale for something so minor, surely there are better ways, I mean why not just get GP's doing the simple stuff

Instead I need to wait about 5 months, then spend a day in hospital for a 30 min op

It all seems a lot of hassle given how long Ive already waited to get this far

Not quite sure what your getting at

But basically I had surgery about 6 months ago, I need a clean up op, its very simple, its a 30 min job in and out and to wait 5 months for it seems ridicolous

Its time GP's actually earn their money and take far more responsibility for the bread and butter procedures and relief the stress and strain on the major surgeons

I have a condition that I feel now is hopeless seeing my GP for, I am at the stage now where I actually phone the care nurse at the hospital ahead of seeing my GP. And my partner is having similar problems and it seems to be because a lot of GP's are, and this is exactly how her GP described themselves, "Old School". That was all I was trying to get at, do you find that your GP is unable to provide you with answers or the relief that you need.

Listen!!!

My wife had a minor stroke last Spring!

They decided she should go for an MRI scan!

It took 6 months!

They discovered she had two aneurisms in the brain!

It took two more months to see the consultant neurosurgeon!

He decided that he wanted a more detailed scan, using an injected dye!

Another two months - due 1st February!

And then they've fixed an appointment for her to see the consultant to decide if they're going to operate on 6 March!

A whole year for having what my wife describes as a time bomb in her head!

PS Both her father and grandmother died from aneurisms!!!

We could pay less taxes and fund a better service.

The NHS is awash with cash. It is being wasted on bureaucrats and terrible IT systems as well as expensive PFI schemes.

I have been waiting 3 yrs past September for a minor op on my face. (no jokes from anyone that knows me please) :) That was when i got a letter to say i was still on the list so about 6 months before that.

If its an emergency i suppose they are better.I phoned my own doc one hogmanay, he arrived 2.45pm, i was going to the operating theatre at 5.45pm.Missed the derby the next day at Tynnie, not happy.Sure it was a 1-1 draw..

Maybe they've got bigger things to worry about than a clean up op.

If you live in Scotland think your self lucky.

Is there anything they don't have a massive waiting list for?

I am waiting for physio for a back problem that i have had for 3 years now. In the first place, they wasted hours and hours to try to find out what was wrong (blood & urine tests, x-ray, Ultrasound). Found nothing, and decided physio was best.

After 2 months of physio, they decided it wasn't solving much and transferred me. Following an MRI scan (8 months ago), they have now put me back on a course of Physio - not straight away though, in another 6 weeks.

The NHS is too big for its own good, I should know as my mother has worked in it for over 25years and for 5 different Health Boards. The whole service is inept and communication is worse than at Tynecastle!

Jesus mate, I find that absolutely appalling! When something like that turns up thats life threatening then it should be treated right away.

I'm getting treated quicker for sleep apnea and its hardly life threatening, unless I fall asleep at the wheel of the car again

The Old Tolbooth
I've been waiting over 4 years to get referred to a sleep specialist

Can anyone top that?

Thats staggering mate, I went to my doctor about a sleeping problem 4 months ago and I'm getting treated for it at the Royal Infirmary next Thursday, at the sleep clinic!

I would push yer doctor mate, seems like he's forgotten all about you.

The NHS again huh?

That old chestnut

Ask yourself if you really need the operation

I mean REALLY need it, not just want it and want it NOW

Can it not wait?

And if it can why the panic and irritation?

One in 5 people in this country are on a waiting list for an operation

Are you seriously telling me they are all necessary?

Couold any health service cope with this volume of operations- theatre time, bed space, post op care, post op physio, managing complications

Or is this just another example of rampant consumerism

"I have a harmless mole on my face- remove it, no I wont wait"- BING another person stretching the list

THere is a difference between real need and perceived need

And I am afraid that the "worried well" are so numerous that getting the care to those that really need it is hard- such as Colin's wife with her MRI- tie the scanners up with people with sore knees who all think they are the most important person in the world and serious problems are missed

Sorry to hear about your wife Colin.

The timescale you quoted has similarities to my Dads who died two years ago from cancer.

I still wonder if he had been seen and treated earlier would he still be alive.

My GP surgery forgot to send a letter when I required a knee op meaning I had to wait an extra 7 months for my surgery.

Having said that the op and rehab have been brilliant so I do have good things to say about the NHS. I may even play football again!

MRSA and nurses which aren't as attractive as they used to be.

They're a veritable 'pay at the gate' option it seems.

I was waiting over 6 months to get a mole removed on my back that was possibly cancerous

My dad was working in Abu Dhabi at the time, so when I went over there I got it checked, and they removed it within 3 days! It was private though, but my dad's company paid for it so not too bad!

After I had been back for 3 months, I got a call from the NHS, asking if I was still wanting to be on the waiting list for it (even though I had informed them that I had got it sorted)

I think a lot of problems are caused by the poor communication between departments, and the bureaucracy. When the woman called, she said a lot of people would get it sorted privately, but not inform them, which is why they did the calls every few months to try and trim the waiting list

It is certainly not the fault of the doctors or nurses, who work really hard in a tough job. My sister is an sho, and she regularly works 100 hours a week
