Statto Posted August 28, 2009 Share Posted August 28, 2009 What way do you think the following matches will go? 1- Stoke v Sunderland 2- Man Utd v Arsenal 3- Barnsley v Reading 4- Bristol City v Middlesbrough 5- Doncaster v Cardiff 6- Sheffield Utd v West Brom 7- Aberdeen v Motherwell 8- Kilmarnock v St Mirren plus any other games you have a good feeling about. Statto Posted August 28, 2009 Author Share Posted August 28, 2009 My opinions on a couple of the above games are; 1- Sunderland have had a great start to the season, they've beaten Blackburn and Bolton and the Norwich in the Carling Cup, their only loss was to Chelsea who seem to be one of the teams to stop this season. Stoke however boast a pretty strong home record, only 1 loss in their last 10, with 3 draws and 6 wins against Man City, Bolton, Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Wigan (all last season) and Burnley. In the last 4 meetings between the sides, Stoke have won 3 and Sunderland have only won 1, however, Sunderland have recently invested heavily in their team, notably a club record transfer fee for Darren Bent. I'm wanting to say a Sunderland win, but can Stoke get anything from this game? 2- Man U have had a poor start considering their fixtures, Birmingham, Burnley and Wigan - they should have 9 points but lost at Burnley and only scraped a 1-0 win against Birmingham. They have lost Ronaldo and Tevez from last season, 2 influential players. Arsenal have started this season really well, 15 goals in 4 games and starting to look like the team they used to be, I can see them doing well this season. Arsenal have only won 2 of the last 10 meetings at Old Trafford, with United winning 6 of these. Statto Posted August 28, 2009 Author Share Posted August 28, 2009 3- Barnsley beat Reading in the Carling Cup in Reading this week, a 90th minute winner won the match, however Barnsley haven't won in their last 5 games at home. Reading have started this season poorly, they have only got 2 points in the league after draws at Swansea and home to Nottm For. The 2 sides they have lost to in the league though are Newcastle and Sheffield United, both in the top 6 in the Championship. Barnsley are bottom with only 1 point. In the only recent meeting between the sides, Reading won 1-0 last season at Barnsley. I'm thinking a win for Reading would kick-start their season but can you see that happening after such a poor start? 4- Bristol City have started well with only 1 loss in the Championship this season against league leaders Cardiff City. Middlesbrough are right near the top of the table as well with dropping points in only 1 of their opening 4 league games against Sheffield United. Both clubs had midweek disappointments in the Carling Cup, Bristol City lost to Carlisle and Boro lost to Nottm For. Middlesbrough have the better record between the 2, winning 1 and drawing 1. Statto Posted August 28, 2009 Author Share Posted August 28, 2009 5- Doncaster have had a decent start to this season, drawing their first 3 games. Cardiff have won 4 and drawn 1 this season in the Championship, however they only have 1 win in the last 5 away games, that being in one of the 2 away games they've played this season. I'd have thought Cardiff should win this one but with the sort of results Doncaster had been getting at the start of the season, I thought this may be tricky for them. 6- Sheffield United have had a good start to the season, drawing with Middlesbrough and Leicester and beating Watford and Reading, they are currently sitting 6th. West Brom are unbeaten this season, drawing on the first game with Newcastle and have won there next 5. Both sides are evenly matched in terms of past results with Sheffield United having won the most recent encounter in 2007. I'd probally say West Brom should win this one but how difficult will it be to beat Sheffield United at home? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Statto Posted August 28, 2009 Author Share Posted August 28, 2009 7- Both Aberdeen and Motherwell have had average starts to their seasons, both knocked out of Europe early, Aberdeen then lost to Celtic but comfortably beat Hamilton and Motherwell were held by St Johnstone but then beat Kilmarnock. At the last 6 matches at Pittodrie, Aberdeen have won 2, Motherwell 1 and a draw 3 times. Motherwell's squad is much younger than last season, Aberdeen probally have the better squad - more experienced, is that enough for them to earn 3 points on Saturday? 8- I think Kilmarnock and St Mirren will both improve on last seasons finishes. Kilmarnock have made Kevin Kyle captain, he scored a couple in the first game v Hamilton and also in the 3-1 victory against Morton in the Cup. St Mirren have got a good frontline with Higdon and Mehmet who both scored in the 2-0 cup victory at Ayr. St Mirren got an impressive draw against Dundee United last week, their away form is very variable, they've won their 2 cup games away from home but lost the 1 league game. Kilmarnock could buy a win at Rugby Park mid-way through last season, but now they are on a 7 game unbeaten run on their own patch. I'm not sure if St Mirren can get a result, Kilmarnock at home will be difficult but St Mirren did manage a win in one of the times they met last season at Rugby park.
