The natural follow-up to this seems to be: who have Hearts almost signed, but let slip through the net, only for them to go on to big things elsewhere? Every club has someone they regret losing: in Norwich's case, it's a teenage Dion Dublin, for example. And didn't Spurs let either Mark Hughes or Roy Keane (can't remember which) go?

We had James McFadden at youth level. That's all i can think of at the mo.

Depends on the rumours you believe. Allegedly Hearts didn't think that Didier Deschamps was worth ?300,000, IIRC Hearts turned down John Brown due to him failing a fitness test, before he signed for R@ng*rs. Hibs didn't think that David Platt was worth ?35,000 and the very obvious one, Hibs demanded that a young striker signed that very day or he would "never pull on a Hibs jersey". :)

Don't think that is strictly true. Did it not fall through because of work permit issues?

The story I heard was....

The fee for Deschamps was only ?50,000 but Alex MacDonald didn't think he was worth the gamble.

And...

John Brown did indeed fail a fitness test after Hearts and Dundee agreed a fee.

Both big mistakes.

Also....

I'm sure Joe Jordan wanted to buy Andy Cole but Wallace wouldn't stump up the cash.

Man Utd let Peter Beardsley go in the early 80's as they didn't think he was as good as M.Hughes or N.Whiteside.

This one's even funnier than Spurs being on the point of signing Emmanuel Petit, only for him to ask Alan Sugar for a cab fare, and hot foot it to Highbury!

Not 100% on this but did Hearts not have the opportunity to sign a young lad called John Greig in the 60's?

If so then :hang:

We 'nearly' dropped a huge clanger when Dave Mackay was on the verge of signing for H***. Thankfully , the management at Tynie found out and the 'mistake' was corrected :2thumbsup:
