Sounds great mate.

I remember my uncle won Willie Baulds shirt in a big glass frame. It was a game where he split his head. Still had the stain on the white collar.

He won it about late 80's. Hung it above his staircase.

Was well jealous likes.

What was the purpose of John Major's visit?

Don't know about Major's visit but i seem to remember WM doing something similar with that old boot Thatcher, some photoshoot at Tynie.

My old man was feckin' livid for months.

I think this happened around the 92/93 season; Jordan's last in charge.

It was a really crap time.

Hearts were crap, music was crap, fashion was crap, my life was crap, Major was crap and dull and tucked his grey shirt into his grey underpants when he wasn't giving Edwina Curry the Maastricht Treaty.

Wallace was one of the Tory parties biggest donators, in the days when that was not considered dodgy. He regularly wined and dined Tory big wigs at Tynecastle including Michael Ancram.

The whole thing was disgraceful when you consider the misery and deprevation the Tory government wreaked on working class people around that time, especially under Thatcher.

My friends and I used to watch games from the "enclosure" in those days and we regularly shouted abuse at Mercer and his cronies lording it over us from the centre stand, so much so that Mercer commented in his programme notes about the lack of respect shown by some supporters towards his guests.

God I hated that man and everything he stood for.

I only think of him in respect of what he did for Hearts which was positive. I didn't agree with his politics but that was none of my business.

Might not have been any of YOUR business but I witnessed a whole generation of youngsters thrown on to the scrapheap because there was no work for them when they left school because of his parties policies. I can NEVER forgive that.

I was around as well. :)

It was painful medicine and I didn't like their approach but I'm afraid a lot of what they did re the economy needed to be done. There are boom times and bust times in the economy. We've done remarkably well since as we took the pain of getting rid of dying industries earlier than most.

Anyway, I only looked at Wallace through my Jambo telescope. Similarly, if any of the players voted Tory it didn't stop me cheering them on either. :cool_shades:

Liked all the tory bashers who eventually realised that it would be financially beneficial to buy their own council house even though they 'disagreed' with the policy.

A tad hypocritical no?

On the flip-side, my life was A1 during that period. Granted the footy was turgid.

I was heavily involved in the music scene and was travelling all over the country checking out bands and generally doing what an eighteen year old does best.

Drinking heavily and indulging in some of lifes more hazardous pastimes!! :P

from a hearts point of view i'm glad you and your friends had never any chance to influence anyone.

if u had we wouldn't be having this discussion as we wouldnt exist.

didn't agree with WM's politics & only judged him on his job @ hearts.

it should be noted that wallace was a tory supporter, which is his democratic right. he didn't create and instigate the policies, only support them. maybe ur ire should be better served at focusing on lang, rifkind, younger, lord james et al rather than a guy who did more good than harm, imho, in his life, and gave a lot of pleasure to me into the bargain. :)

a mans politics should not be an issue when saving a football club from extinction, after all we have taken Vlad & his "murky" millions. when everyone else in the world takes on the sanctimonious vision of not allowing tories, communists, socialists, phalangists, tree huggers from running fitba clubs, i may come round to it.

until then i don't care. (except in respect of baby killers like mobutu, amin etc............... maybe ) :P

I accept what you say and I am the first one to argue that Mercer didn't do a bad job at Hearts but he used the club to push his political mates into the public limelight and as they were the ones who caused death and misery to thousands throughout the country I cannot forgive him for that.

All said and done though, if it weren't for this man that you 'hated', you would've been sitting in a carpark with your mates and not Tynecastle watching Hearts FC on a Saturday afternoon. Fact.

He was a Tory. Big deal. Foulkes is a Labour puppet. Big deal. Salmond is a Jambo and a Nationalist. Big deal.

This is football not lies and deceit......sorry....politics.
