MGM Hotel - Las Vegas

I have been in it, but not stayed in it. My impressions are that it is a good hotel and ideally situated in the middle of the strip. I don't think there is a bad hotel on the strip.

Like W45, I have been in it but not stayed. Was in Vegas just a few months ago though. Good location and seems a good hotel.

I would have said it was nearer the bottom of the strip.

Agreed - there's only Luxor and Mandalay Bay after MGM before the strip ends I think. To me I'd class the Mirage and Treasure Island as being on the middle of the strip

I would class Caesar's Palace and Flamingo/Imperial Palace as the middle? But that might just be me?

I stayed in the Palace Station, which is a bit north of the strip, but not far off. Was cheap, and to a good standard (well, considering I was backpacking about with a mate). Decent sized casino and such. It was a bit past its best, but still really enjoyed it.

Walked through the others like MGM and the Belagio (that was class!), but never made it to Hooters casino...which was opening up the week I was there

They're all much the same in terms of standard of room etc. and each hotel/casino has it's own "grab" to get you in. The newer ones obviously tend to be brighter. That said, I still think that Caesar's is in a class of it's own, closely followed by the Mandalay Bay and Wynn. It's worth noting that there are only really 3 or 4 companies that own all the hotels. Also the best "free" shows are Treasure Island, Belagio Fountains and Mirage Volcano.

If you do go, the Grand Canyon is worth a flight and Hoover is worth a visit if you like your big structures :)

Has anyone been to this hotel and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

Hope it's not the profits from the race night being gambled;)

I stay at the Monte Carlo, short walk to the MGM, the room rates at Monte Carlo are a bit less expensive than MGM butr the two are situated very close. We like that particular end of the Strip as most of the better hotel/casinos are from the middle out to that end. There are free trains from that area to the outlying Excalibur, Mandalay, Luxor. I am actually booked for the Monte Carlo on 4th May.

sshh, was trying to keep that quiet ;)

Seriously though, we are booked up for 4 nights at the MGM in July and just wondered if anyone had been. Initially, we were looking to go to the Mirage for 3 nights, however, my in-laws who live in LA, looked into it for us and they were able to get us 4 nights at the MGM for $736,which also includes flight from LA. Worked out around $150 cheaper than going to the Mirage for 3 nights :)

Am i alone in thinking Vegas is incredibily cheesey/schmaltzy Americana at it's worst?

A town created and run by America's underworld so they can launder billions of dollars under the guise of 'wholesome family entertainment'.

That said, the MGM is a good spot for some boxing/UFC tear-ups. ;)

Vegas is a hole.

I've been to few places in the world that I have enjoyed less than Las Vegas.

It is a great place to get out of, to Canyon Country not so far away.

But I can see why some people love it there.

Yeah thats me to a tee, love it, its so different to what I grew up in, the extreme opposite to the starchy old Scots style. Suit and tie everywhere you went, Sunday walk in your best clothes, nae pubs, nae playing in the street, grey was considered a bright color. Of course when I got older it was better, uniform at work, uniform gabardine raincoat and bunnet with maroon scarf to the game, pubs open 12 to 3 and 5 to 10, still nae Sunday unless you went out of town and signed your nom de plume as a traveller. e.g Gary Cooper Hollywood, Cary Grant same.

Everything you say about Vegas is of course spot on, but for us its a pleasant three short day drive. We pass through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, and although nothing comes free in Vegas they give us comps, which we know we have well paid for, but its the thought that counts, right.:)

As with life in general, you take the rough with the smooth Bob.

That part of America is indeed beautiful if a tad on the burny burny side for this Northern lad. :)

Totally wrong mate.

The whole city is so regulated. The Nevada gaming commission know every trick in the book.

Great place whether you gamble or not.

Stayed at the Venetian last year. Fantastic.

I stayed in Vegas in 2005. Some of it is really good, some really naff and run down.

I stayed just over from the MGM at the Luxor and went inside most of the main hotels. I think the Ceasar's Palace is 'the one' on the strip, but the MGM is the biggest.

Here is my Top 5 Vegas tips:

Titianic Exhibition Tropicana

Elvis Musuem

All you can eat Sushi at the Aladdin

Fountians at the Bellagio

Inside the lobby at the Luxor.

Buffalo Bill

Think the place was on fire a couple of weeks ago!!!

Would check with them to make sure it will be okay

MGM looked magic, you could easily get lost for days in it

Avoid circus circus and the stratosphere HOLES

Monte Carlo re-opened today - 1500 rooms have opened with another 1200 in the next week.

MGM is massive - play the Lions Share progressive - it's the only one of it's type left in the MGM - old school progressive, oh yea!

For me I would prefer to stay in the middle of the strip, Flamingo(ish) area. The cost of the monorail is getting out of hand - I think it was $5 for a single trip which is outrageous!

The Deuce bus runs up and down the strip is $5 for 24 hour travel, it's quite slow and busy as it stops everywhere! However it will take you downtown and also to 2 of the discounted fashion malls.

I am going back in November this year and have reserved a room in Harrahs, however I am checking the deals every fortnight or so to see if there's anything better out there and will cancel and re-book if necessary.

Checked with them, reopens today. Interior damage was minimal most of it was on the roof where the guys were doing some repairs. Fairly confident about safety, the authorities done a lot of research and inspections before allowing repairs to take place. I saw the fire on TV and the room we had on the 31st floor in September was right under the fire. Will take a lower floor in May, a fireman friend said never to go above the 10th floor as thats as high as most of the ladder thingys go.

If my wife is at a winning machine, or I am doing well at Blackjack, they will have to get six guys to pull us out of there fire, tornado or terrorist attack.:)

Ceasers does not come close to the Venetian for instance where EVERY room is suite size and in general is a class above Ceasers. That being said, Ceasers is probably more fun even if its because its generally cheaper than the Venetian and attracts a different crowd. For me the best rooms I've stayed in were the Venetian, best hotel and most fun was Mandalay Bay. Problem with Mandalay, Luxor, MGM etc is that they are way down the bottom of the strip, but to be honest.....who cares depending on what you are doing, and time of year you often dont get out the hotel much.

hhmmm good question, I've been four times and I don't think I've every walked directly from the MGM to the middle of the strip as I pop in everywhere on the way down!

A rough guestimate would be circa 25-30 mins.

Don't be fooled by how close the hotel you are going to looks as they are so big they are much further away that you would think!

10 mins tops if your just walking on the road but the hotels are all mostly inter linked aswell so you will no doubt go into them all.Use the tram service that is linked to MGM to take you to places like the Hilton which is off the strip(Star Trek Experience is really good especially the newer 4D ride). But the tram service overall is the best way to get about the strip it runs straight from MGM right down to the bottom at the Sahara.Another little tip don't let some of the dingy hotels put you off there are somne great shows at places like Harrahs.Fill your days mate or you will just end up walking about aimlessly doing nothing.Think that is the problem most people i know that have come back from Vegas saying it was ok but not great, when you asked them what they done they basically said nothing.Go see the shows and ride the attractions.Oh and if you drink get on the Samuel Addams

brashy what do you consider to be the middle of the strip?

I reckon it easlily over a mile from say the MGM to the Flamingo - factor in the crossings and the crossings that go over some of the junctions and I'd say it takes at least 20 mins

Last year there was a similar thread, somebody mentioned the Brunch at Bally's on a Sunday. We went to it in September when we were there. Non stop champagne being poured, excellent food. May 4th will be there shortly after arrival.:o

Bonnie Prince Charlie

I've never stayed at the MGM but I have been nearby in the Luxor and the Excalibur. However I did have a drink in 2 of the bars - one is a fake Irish bar with an old woman looking like a leprechaun jumping up and down to the live music. The better bar in the hotel is "the bar in Times Square" (I think it's called this) where the 2 guys will play any tune for money of course and they are really good. If you want to catch up on any sport then get a taxi to the Crown and Anchor at 1350 East Tropicana Avenue. There's a kilted Liverpudlian who regularly plays the pipes in there - I guess he's entitled to wear the kilt as he was in the Scot's Guards.

Mandalay Bay does have (what I think) the best bars. Rum Jungle is fun as has been said, Red Square (Vodka Bar) is great fun and serves good food. I just think that overall Mandalay is the best hote lfor mid range bars, with a lot to choose from. Its also seemingly great in the hot weather with their wave pools, beach etc.

Another "Theme" bar I like on the strip is Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville, and no I dont like Buffet, but his bars are great fun and serve great Margaritas. What I like about the Vegas place is the roof top bar overlooking the strip, great place to spend a not so hot afternoon. Even great in the colder weather with its outdoor gas heaters. Worth a visit

The Kilted Lady is also good in The Rio.Very nice buxum Asian barmaids in little kilts last time i was there. They say it is a Scottish bar but it seemed more Irish to me though. There bars in Mandalay may be mdi range price wise but there food is not it would cost you over ?100 for a chinese in there.

Its a few years ago but I went to a Mexican in Mandalay Bay.

It was the day before I went to the Oscar De La Hoya v Yory Boy Campas (Erik Morales undercard) boxing fight and I thought the food was average however reasonably priced.

Thats said; quite enjoyed Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill at Caesar's Palace.
